Re: WHY I AM AGAINST HIVEMIND

I am against hivemind because it bumps other game-related threads off the front page of the General forum. If it were just one thread, it wouldn't be a huge deal. But usually it is two, and sometimes THREE hivemind threads on the front page of the General section. People start a new Hivemind at a time when others are still posting on prior Hiveminds. This is very annoying, and therefore I am now against Hivemind as being self-centered (or is that hive-centered?).

actually, the hivemind is limited to one active thread at a time, which can't be bigger than 800 posts. the moderators are pretty strict about this. granted, the transitions can be unsmooth.

also:

a) darkness is a mod and hiver

b) quite alot of rpg discussion gets done in the hive along with everything else

this is usually not the case. whenever there's been 3 Hive threads, it's been on accident and two of them are closed. whenever there are two active, it's because one has been closed, but sometimes people mistakenly still post (not knowing a new one has been started)

we try our best to keep it to one active thread at a time....

I have yet to see, in resent weeks, that your best is anywhere near good enough. There is almost always at least two hiveminds on the front page (as there is right now). It should be a rule that you cannot start a new hivemind thread until the previous one has been officially closed and locked by a moderator. As it stands, self-regulation is simply not cutting it.

As poeple have said your facts are exagerated. And this thread is doing the same thing you claim the Hivemind thread does. Also, the threads getting bumpoed to the second page have already fallen pretty far down so it's not like the high traffic threads are being destroyed. If you would like to participate in a serious discussion on this then we can start a thread in Meta and talk this out.

Then Darkness should take responsibility to actually close AND LOCK hivemind threads BEFORE someone is allowed to start a new one.

And I have been in Hivemind many times. Little RPG discussion actually takes place, nor is it easily accessable information for non hiveminders (or even for Hiveminders who are not there at the actual moment of the discussion, since Hive pages go by so fast). If people actually want to discuss RPG stuff with other people on Enworld, they would do better to make it a thread itself. As it stands right now, all you would get is a cliquish participation, which alienates people on the board who are non-hivers.

i see your point, but how is it our fault the the other Hive thread still on page one hasn't fallen to page two yet? no one has posted in it in an hour and-a-half...

There are two threads because other threads haven't bumped the other one down. And that is because the boards were down most of the day. Be patient it will be gone soon. :D

It is not exagerated. There is almost always two hive threads on the front page. I'm sure others can back me up on this...it's a fact, not something I am imagining.

Second page can't be TOO low in the traffic - it contains posts from TODAY. People who live on the west coast have not even had a chance to see them yet, after getting off of work.

This thread is a protest movement. It got your attention, didn't it? One RPG thread bumped to the second page is a small price to pay for actual attention to the issue. Meta doesn't get many readers...you will get a better discussion here (for now).

EVERYONE is a hiver. So many people have said many times that anyone is welcome to join in. Sorry if you missed those posts.

I have been on the board most of the day (for shame!). I have not seen it go down. Perhaps just your connection went down, or a hub near you?

See the thread in Meta where PC explains what happened today.
