Any of you pine for AD&D 1/2?

I get these "BAM...I feel almost like I'm playing a video game" moments when playing 3e.
Well, I'll stop short of claiming that 3E feels like a video game, because I don't play it that way. However, I think *all* versions of D&D lend themselves to that style of play. It's a race from one level to the next. Each powerup you grab (magic items, loot) enable you to gain a higher level, which grants you more powerups (spells, HP, BAB), so you can chase tougher opponents to get better powerups, etc, etc, etc, ad nausem.....

So, while you aren't shoe-horned into that kind of game, D&D certainly makes it easy to play it that way. I think 3E is the "most enabling", via the CR system, which assumes a certain level of magic will be present in each party.

But like I said, I don't get the video game feel from 3E, unless I am playing it like that. Your mileage may vary, offer void where prohibited. :D

I think the reason 3e feels more game like to some is the speed at which PC's level compared to the older versions. A lot of people like that though. It's a bit fast IMO.

I enjoyed 1E when we played it. We had a 1E and an OD&D campaign going right up until 1986. The 2E sent us packing for the most part, the OD&D campaign lingered a few more months. Like WizardDru and others we switched game systems - WFRP in our case. I had mostly gone to a homebrewed rule system when 3E brought me back in to regular RPGing. I don't miss the old editions or we would be playing them.
