Any of you pine for AD&D 1/2?

I am playing in a 1ed campaign right now, and while I do not care for the rules, there is something about it that is extremely fun. I love 3.5, but there is something 1ed has going for it. Maybe it is the simpleness of just having a character that can easily be whipped up in about a minute and just romp through a dungeon, and not having to worry about a dozen different combat options.

I wouldn't go back to it full time though. While I like the simpleness of it, I still like the customization that 3.5 has going for it.

As for 2ed...I had a blast playing it, but I really wouldn't want to go back to it.

Ironically, I started a weekday 3.0 campaign to preserve my weekend 2e core game (I had grown to love 2e once I restricted it to the core books). Then I liked 3e so much I converted the weekend 2e game. Now, I kind of wish I hadn't switched it, but it has been a WHILE since I ran either and it may a LONG WHILE before I resume; so no real loss. d20 is so much smoother, especially combat. I miss the 2e flavor, but not the mental gymnastics of THAC0 (and THAC0 was a vast improvement over its predecessor!).

What I really love is the flexibility of d20 to run games in other settings. So, I probably wouldn't go back just for that reason.

Actually, yes and no. I am wanting a more rules lite game, after 3-4 years of 3e I am started to get bogged down by skills this and feats that and tweakage of this and tweakage of that and 4 page character sheets and supplement A and Prestige Class Z,X and Y and you get the picture...

WHat I am wanting is Basic D&D, a nice rules lite system where I can hand a few 3x5 notecards to my players, have them roll their stats and buy their equipment and start playing... That would rule...

Then I start remembering the complexity of Thac0 and all those saving throws and my anus starts bleeding and I think I want a D20 rules lite Basic D&D game and not the upcoming boxed set, no prestige classes, no feats, simple skill system etc.

D'oh. I thought this was a thread about the dragon magazine april fools articles.

You know, with the 1/2 level spells?

Invisibility 1/2
"Close your eyes and say 'you can't see me!'"

Hmm. Maybe I'm the only one who read those . . . .

I remember trying to read the Hackmaster PHB. I had to set it down after I started yelling at it ("No! Why are these rules so arbitrary? Why does everything use a different mechanic? It makes no sense!") While my 1E days are looked back on fondly, so is my time playing my Atari 2600.

I have to agree that the adventures are still classic. In fact, I'm currently DMing Return to Keep on the Borderlands, to be followed by the Slavers series, all in my 3.5 FR Silver Marches game.

Missing You

I don't necessarily miss the systems so much as the feeling when playing. The hobby has grown a lot since those early days. We as gamers have come a long way too. What I fear is the average age of roleplayers is getting higher and there are fewer and fewer new young players.

I don't miss the 1e/2e rules, but I miss the atmosphere. I wonder how much of that atmosphere I miss is really about nostalgia though. Were 2e products really as flavor-heavy rules-lite as I remember them, or am I only remembering the good stuff and forgetting the bad? Was I really interested in at least one or two products a month, or do I just think I was because I evenutally bought them and liked them? Did I really roleplay more and hack and slash less, or do the roleplaying events just stand out more in my memory?

Okay I am certain that the art was better (although it began departing from my tastes well before 3E), and I'm certain that the full color glossy format for both books and magazines makes reading them more difficult because light tends to glare off them.

I guess if I could have my ideal, I'd want the 3rd Edition core rules (3.0 with a few things brought in from 3.5), with 2nd Edition style supplements and campaign settings, using 1st and early 2nd Edition art with 1st Edition type paper and bindings.

It Was Fun

The AD&D and AD&D 2nd Ed. days were fun for me. But, I don't miss them. I have enjoyed the evolution and changes made to the D&D game over the years and I have found fun in each edition of D&D. I do play v.3.5 currently, especially as an RPGA member (Living Greyhawk GM and player). I like getting new books and learning new things. So, I'll always support and play the contemporary manifestation of D&D.

I still miss some things from 1e, but go back to a skillless system? No thanks! I do NOT miss 2e, at all.

There are still a few 1e games, and quite a few 2e games, on Macray's Keep (http://www.macrayskeep.com), though, so obviously, someone is still enjoying them enough to play!
