Anyone else miss weapon speed?

I was just thinking about it and really did like weapon speed factored into intiative. It just makes sense to me that some weapons can be wielded faster then others.

So am i alone on this, or do any of you guys agree?

It unnecessarily complicates the system for little benefit- with 3e's round-robin rounds, it will only make a difference on the very first round of combat, and after that, everyone is just going in order anyway. To make it really make a difference, you'd have to reinstate initiative rolls every round.

Nope, don't miss it. It never made a lot of sense and slowed down the game. Sean Reynolds wrote a piece on this a few years ago, and it's one of the few things I agree with him on.

How was it done in 2E?

Each weapon had a weapon speed entry~ daggers were speed 2, longswords were speed 5, and greatswords were speed 10 for instance. This was a modifier to your initiative, the higher your initiative number, the slower you went.

So, for instance, I'm a fighter with a 16 dex (-1 'reaction modifier'. aka -1 to initiative), wielding a longsword (speed 5). I roll my d10 for init, it comes up a 7. 7 (init roll) + 5 (weapon speed) -1 (dex mod) = 11. I go on initiative 11.

Yes, I miss weapon speeds. Err, missed them with Phandaal's Baleful Annihilation. I don't like weapon speeds.

I think they got rid of weapon speed because it distorts the intiative count, unless you reroll initiative every round. If I add +3 (dagger) to my initiative my first turn and you subtract -4 (2hd axe) for yours, I'll typically act before you. The next round I can drop the dagger, quick draw the 10 foot pole and poke you in the eye, before you get your action - lurching at me with bare fists. I'd also be careful with spellcasting speed.

All in all, you could add weapon speed yourself and play the way you want to. I just think it has the potential to be abused by quickdraw artists unless you reroll init. every round.

I think there are 4 dead horses in the pasture now.

Poor Harm, why is everybody still beating him.

Poor poor Haste We loved ya. When they are done beating Harm they will come back to you.

The ol Ranger Stuck on that darned shaft, I'm sure the group will come back to you soon.

Then theres Weapon Speed. You pop up every now and then. Why can't they let you stay buried.

Sean Renyolds had an article on his site about weapon speed. I hated them and gald they are gone.
