Anyone ever try this: Hey-hey, we're the Monk-ees...

I have tried to sell my players on this idea since Exalted Deeds presented innate abilities based on vows. The VoP gives pretty good so that the impoverished guys can compete in levels where magic is somewhat required. One of the players actually likes the general idea but has probs with the whole LG monk (he just can not grasp the concept that lawful monks don't depants obnoxious nobles :) )

I ALWAYS do point buy. Though now that I think of it, this sort of group would lend itself to rather higher point values. Like instead of the 32 I regurlarly do, 36 or even a bit more.

As to player motivation - it is true that for many this would simply have no appeal. Though on the other side of that coin, struggles shared are lessened. While a single player might have trouble with a VoP when everyone else is counting their magical toaster ovens, if the whole group knows they don't get any of the loot, then they sort of "share the pain" and can work together with that assumption.

Plus, the interesting thing about such a group is it can be done in ANY campaign - as in low magic or high magic now really becomes irrelevant. Either they ignore a few magic items every six levels or they are ignoring a dozen magic items a level. Either way, it doesn't matter. I think we have the whole high / medium-standard / low magic thing solved!

Make it an underwater campaign and you can have a sea-monkee game.

You really do have to work hard at coming up with other motivations for your players. Without gold or cool magic items, they may fail to see the point, cool premise or no. Part of the fun of D&D is the loot. It's the other half of "Kill the monsters and ____ _____ _____"

You made a mistake:
Ride Off On The Women
is 5 words.
