Anyone here change their group's gaming style single-handedly?

I ask because I don't think it can be done. Not when the group has been around for a while. Roleplaying in our games consists of 1 part roleplay and 2 parts witty banter. It's almost like a contest to determine who can come up with the best one-liner by the end of the session. It can be fun sometimes, but I find myself wanting to play something with a little more substance.

By no means do I want to find another gaming group. I've been hanging out with the same group for nearly a decade now. Would it be rude to start a new game and then ask them to try to put more emphasis on role-playing?

I'd assume that a particular play style usually has a particular DMing style accompanying it. If you present an intriguing and interesting enough game, they might get involved enough to forget to banter. Easier said than done though...

Everytime you hear a clever one liner, some witty bantar, or other assorted terrifying speach; a tree next to the player that spoke explodes in a giant fireball causing 20d6 damage. Try it, they'll learn. It tends to happen like this:

Player - "I hate the DM."

Me - "The tree next to you explodes, you take 20d6 damage."

Player - "But we're in the desert!"

Me - "Fine, it was a cactus; roll an extra 10d6 because of needles."

Player - "Where'd the cactus come from and how'd it explode, that doesn't make any sense."

Me - "It's magic, I don't try to understand it, I just live it. Watch Harry Potter 20 times in a row and you will understand."

Player - "I hate you."

Me - "Hmm... Another cactus, weird."

In conclusion, I have less players, but I have more roleplaying. This works best when you keep the players chained up in the basement so they can't quit the game.
