Anyone Recognize this Book?

Okay, this was a book that I remember reading a LONG time ago. I unfortunately left it at someone's house and promptly never saw them again, so I couldn't get it back.

I remember the book being a fantasy book, slightly weird. I don't remember much about the book, but the beginning for some reason stuck in my head.

It was in a wintery place and the main character is young boy who is resorting to pickpocketing to get buy. He ends up picking the pocket of a nobleman on a steed and is chased through the city and caught. Although he fears what punishment might befall him, he is in fact taken into service to protect the son of the nobleman. He is raised into adolescence but then something happens and more something happens.

Basically, I don't remember anything after that. If anyone can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks much in advance.
