D&D General Arcane trickster vs soulknife

Hey

I have some questions about these classes.

1- What are some examples from movies or tv of these 2 classes?

2- Which is more focused on melee?

1. I've got none from movies or tv, but examples do exist in other mediums. Soulknife is Psylocke of the X-Men. Or well, that's how it started. It's evolved quite a bit over time and is now a pretty uniquely D&D thing. The same goes for Arcane Trickster. It started as any Grey Mouser type "Rogue who's picked up some spellcasting" character, and now it's got unique gimmicks with Mage Hand that are more uniquely D&D.

2. Neither. Or both, if you prefer. Soulknife works as both melee or short ranged thrown, and Arcane Trickster has nothing that biases it towards or away from melee combat. So if you want to be melee, either will do.

Not movies or TV, but the protagonists in the Dishonored videogames have a very Arcane Trickster feel. All the stealth skills of a rogue combined with a limited but effective bag of magical tricks.

Psylocke, from the Marvel Universe, seems like a soulknife.

In Mass Effect 3 I believe your Commander Shepard can go the Biotics route and have the melee Omni Blade, which is a Soulknife-ish build.

Loki in the MCU encompasses both soulknife and arcane trickster features, adept with illusions but also able to manifest blades.

Your second question depends upon what you mean by melee. A subclass that is melee focused could simply be one that prefers melee to ranged, or it could mean one that is capable of filling the defender / striker melee role and being a member of the front lines in combat.

If you're looking for someone that can stand on the front lines, I would not suggest rogue as the class for you - at least not pure rogue. If that were the goal, I'd go with a fighter or ranger to level 5 and then multiclass rogue. Some other melee options that work as a 1.) magic using, 2.) stealthy, 3.) melee force build are: a.) Dex based Eldritch Knight with the Urchin background to 6, then Arcane Trickster. b.) Elven Bladesigner with a dex focus, c.) Hexblade warlock with a dex weapon and urchin background, and d.) wild magic barbarian that uses strength to attack, but is also dextrous. They take Fey Touched at 4 to get invisibility which you'll use before comat and either false life or disguise self... neither of which require concentration.

Yeah, dex fighter with some rogue levels is going to be way better as a melee specialist, IMO.

Rogue is one of those classes that just works better as part of a multi-class build rather than on its own, unless you have a vision of your character as a pure espionage type.
