Even if 4E is a good system, I've spent so much money on 3.5 that it'd be too painful to switch to an uncompatible system. If it is compatable ... then it might make a difference
I'm in the same boat. I own every single 3.0-3.5 WotC book up to the last couple of months or so.

I really liked the improvement of 3.5 after 3.0, so I can only imagine that 4e will be even more smooth and easy to use. But I've spent the last 6 years finally learning 3.x rules and I feel I'm good with the rules. I don't want to spend more of my time learning new rules again. :(

I may be a 3.5 grognard.

I dunno. I think Grognard is a term already claimed by those who played D&D with an initial in front of it - OD&D, AD&D, even BECMI D&D.

You decimal D&D folks (3.x, 4.x, etc) gotta go find your own term.

Decnard? Grogimal?

Hey, thats not bad. Thats right up there with 3tard and 4oron. :)

Well, I don't know if I qualify as an 'actual' grognard, as I'm going to have to give 4e a chance EVENTUALLY, just Like I had to do with 3e.. and 3.5.
The problem is, when 3e came out, I didn't have that many 2e books, so it wasn't THAT big of a deal. When 3.5 came out, I had a few 3e, but they were mostly compatible (Sword & Fist, ELH, Savage Species).
NOW, though, I've got an entire freaking shelf-full of splat-books, and was looking forward to several more.. and then WHAM.
What do they think this is, M:TG?

As has been posted previously by others, if it IS compatible with 3.5, I'll be fine. Otherwise, I'll be majorly peeved, but what can I do about it, eh?

Greetings!

Well, I certainly hope they provide some thorough conversion notes, so that if customers--oh, yeah, all those loyal, devoted customers that invested thousands of dollars in 3.5E books--can not only use 4E, but also still maintain some of the solid value in the 3.5E books they have purchased. I really do.

Of course, what's also galling about this, is that I have some books--like Monster Manual V, DMG II, PHB II, the Drow book, that have not really been used fully. Let alone exhausted of ideas or thier value. To think that they--oh, and hell, Monster Manual IV was not put out that long ago either--would just be made mechanically useless, because of a total incompatibilty--is very frustrating.

Of course, unlike with the edition change from 2.0 to 3.0, when a huge amount of people were ready for a change--many people just might become 3.5E Grognards. It seems there is a huge amount of people that feel that 3.5E is not nearly so broken that it requires a whole new edition, and a whole new rinse and repeat outlay of $5,000 dollars of books--many of which you just bought in the last year or so, and the shiny new sheen on the covers haven't even been so much as smudged hardly with a finger-print, let alone been deeply played and utilized.

SHARK

Well, SHARK, maybe we can play 3.x together on the DnDinsider Game Table, and not be able to utilise all the features for $9.95/month? Just don't tell me you're a Mac-user... ;)

(My Complete Champion arrived two days ago, and an Expedition to ... arrived today. Talk about mixed feelings)

The mess of arbitrary old unwieldy and unplayable rules that was 3.5? Come on, be honest. How many people do you know who ever played 3.5 as written? NOBODY! It was all house rules, man! Your 3.5 game and my 3.5 game were totally different! Totally! It isn't gonna be like that any more! 4th will change things, and for the better.

(this thing is broken I can't turn it ooooooooooffffffffffffffffffffffff)

I always ran things according to the 3.5 rules and when there was a question of what the rules meant, I went here to EN world. Unlike 2ed, most 3.5 games were extremely similar. The rules were there (though there were many) so the DMs didn't have to make up a lot of individual stuff.

I miss it already... wait I'm playing Tuesday.
