Balanced as ECL +1 ???

These are the stats I am thinking of using for the dwarves in my homebrew... reasonably balanced as ECL +1?

_________________________________________________

Dwarves

As PHB with the following exceptions...

+2 Strength, -2 Dexterity, +4 Constitution

(Average dwarf: Str 13, Dex 08, Con 15, Int 11, Wis 11, Cha 10)

Treat as Large for purposes of encumberance. (So the average dwarf can lug around 300 pounds as a heavy load)

+1 natural armor

+1 bonus to hit applies versus Kro, Giants, Drow, & Duergar, likewise
they suffer at least a -4 to all NPC reaction rolls with these beings.

-4 racial penalty to Swim skill checks, in addition dwarves require a
move-equivalent action each round just to tread water, and it requires
a full-round action for them to swim 1/25 of their base speed.

Auto. Languages: Dwarven & Terran

Domain restriction: Dwarven clerics must choose Earth as one of their
initial domains.

ECL +1

It sounds a bit more like +2 to me. I take it you're going for the "Dwarves are really really dense" thing here.

They have a total +4 on ability scores and a +1 to hit on serveral diverse races that are commonly found in an underdark setting. The swim penalty is a good idea, but I'd make it 1/10th speed, just to keep things simple.

If you increased the dex penalty to -4 and tossed in a -2 cha penalty, I'd call it +1.

I'd say it is a +1 race (old ECLs, not the dragon article). ;)

Thanks for the replies.

Old ECL are the way to go... anything that sets Lizardfolk at +4 is outta whack :p

Oh, and the 1/25 is a figure from the PHB. Normally characters can go 1/25 their speed as a ME action and 1/2 their speed as a full action.

What does treat as large when applying strength mean. And what's a Kro?

I'd say they are ecl +2. they seem a bit strong for ecl +1

Just what it says. Treat them as large sized creatures for purposes of applied strength. Thus they would have x2 carrying capacity.

And Kro basically equate to Orcs.

Would they also be considered large for grapple and trip checks etc?

Really, "Treat as Large when applying strength" isn't at all clear. Rename it "Treat as Large when figuring encumbrance" would be a lot easier to understand.

I would say +2.

Huh. It seemed slow to me, but if it's in the PHB, sure.

You are right. Edited for clarification.

I had forgotten that you get size bonuses for grapple and trip.

I think that you could change their Large size equivalency to include grapple checks (they are well anchored and dense) as well as carrying capacity. With those benefits you could remove the +2 strength without sacrificing the concept of the race and it would fit firmly into ECL +1.
