Also, distances are measured in units of distance, not in arbitrary geometric shapes.

Measuring things in Hexes or Squares is absolutely no different than feet or meters. They're all abstract, human-created units of measure. It's not like meters or inches or grams or pounds actually exist in the foundation of the universe. They're just terms applied to numbers.

I vote meters, failing that than yards (which can easily be converted to meters). My bigges problem with the current system is that it makes corridors and rooms too small, why the heck does a smal creature take a space 5' x 5'? That's literally a meter and a half square, a 10 feet corridor should be able to hold three fully armed people abreast, four if they all use firearms and are friendly...

Measuring things in hexes and squares assumes grid combat and I hate grid combat.

The problem with yards is that most people generally don't use them on a day by day basis. Rooms and buildings are described in feet so giving a person math to try to picture something probably isn't the best idea.

I'm one of the few that does use yards often since I'm a golfer.

Meters are part of that metric system fad they tried pushing on us back in the 1970s.

I'll stick with five feet/ square.

I voted Meters/Yards. I feel as if 5 square feet is actually too large of a space, where as a square meter/yard seems much more realistic in terms of how I visualize combat.

In Australia we use metres and the metric system. Nothing gets me quicker out of "fantasy/medieval" mode quicker than seeing metres (or for that matter squares). Metres in a space/future setting, cool bananas but NO WAY in a fantasy setting. International people have been living with feet for long enough in D&D that it does not matter. We don't need things dumbed down to yards so we can do the yards are slightly smaller than metres "equivalence" thing.

That's not my point and your opinion on hexes and squares is not the issue.

All measurement is abstract. They're human creations and as such, we cannot honestly say that one is more legitimate than another.

If you'd LIKE something, well that's fine. But your personal preference does not affect it's legitimacy or change it's level of abstraction.
