Battelstar Galactica in Sweden, worth watching?

First Post
Tonight Battlestar Galactica starts to air on a channel in Sweden. I've seen you guys discuss the series earlier but I haven't been paying attention. It's the first season episodes 1-13. Is it worth watching?

Absolutely. I came to it rather late, but it is definitely worth watching.

I do recommend you obtain and watch the short pilot mini-series first though; I didn't see that until after I'd seen episode 1 of the series and I was kinda "whaa?". Seeing the pilot first really helps make a lot more sense of the early episodes.

I've only seen season 1 so far, but while it was on it was one of the only 'must watch' things on TV for me.

Cheers

Definitely. In my opinion, it is probably the best science fiction show around these days (and I am eagerly awaiting the beginning of the 3rd season this october)

While still being a spaceship-based show (like so many others sci-fi), it maintains its own feeling and offers unique concepts and themes. They go directions and cover topics that are not found in other sci-fi shows.
The acting and directing is great, as is the music.

There is some amazingly subtle acting in BSG. Very impressive. The directorial style is reminiscent of Firefly. The music is quite good.

I watched the mini-series, and thought "This might be pretty good." By just a couple of episodes, I was hooked. While it's not my favorite show ever, I'm pretty sure it's the best thing on TV currently. We just picked up the 2.5 dvd set, and damn, still great.

If you like good stories, check.
If you like fine acting, check.
If you like drama, check.
If you like action, check.
If you like some wicked cool space combat, check.
If you like the occasional well-handled commentary on current issues, check.

So, like, I guess I recommend checking it out.

Battlestar Galactica in Sweden

I also recommend the SciFi Channel's new "Battlestar Galactica," which is arguably one of the better military space operas ever on television. However, if you have fond memories of the original 1970s series, whose velour uniforms, hairstyles, and optimistic plots had as much to do with early "Star Trek" as with "Star Wars," you might have difficulty adjusting to the much darker post-"Babylon 5" and post-9/11 tone. Also, several of the characters' names and genders have been reassigned, which could again be confusing to a fan of the older show.

Like "B5," "Farscape," and "Serenity/Firefly," the revisionist "BSG" requires close attention to continuity, features solid special effects and acting (if somewhat irrational characters), and explores more adult themes than its predecessors. Without getting into the debate of which is better, a lot will depend on your personal preference. If you prefer heroic fantasy/science fiction, you might want to stick with something like the long-running "Stargate SG1" or "Doctor Who." If you like postapocalyptic allegories, try "BSG."

I just saw the first episode and I think it's great! The name (Battlestar Galactica) sounded cheesy to me so I was half-expecting something a little less serious than Star Trek :). Boy, was I wrong. This series is pretty hardcore. I really felt for those poor refugees or whatever they are. -Can't just tell yet.

Hmm. Does the viewing experience in Sweden be any different than the viewing experience in the US ... even Hawaii?

You should watch it, even though the re-imagined version is a far different cry from the original 70's series.

BTW, how can the name "Battlestar Galactica" sound cheesy? I don't know how it is translated in Swedish.

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Yyyyeeeeeeeeeessssss!!!

Seasons 1 & 2 have been some of the best sci-fi ever on television. Seriously.

It's best to watch the miniseries first, but if the first two episodes don't suck you in, you're probably a Cylon.

Of course it's human propaganda against the Cylons. We're their next evolution. :]
