en world boards

"this thread has been polite"

In my expirence here on the enworld board over the last 2 months that has been the general feeling I have gotten here. it ok to have a view, its ok to post that view but to do so in a way that doesn't attack the other posters personally shows a matureity that is not often seen online. thats one reason why I post a lot more here then elsewhere.

Very true my scribe. :) But don't be surprised if you find a rude person that doesn't know the rules. I'm glad to say the Kenzer guys are among the more polite bunch out there. :)

Ah well that's nice to see. I like that kind of thinking in my gaming. But that's just me. Is the information in the Campaign setting or the Player's Guide?

I can't find it now but it's probably in the Player's Guide, since the Campaign Setting predates the Psionic Handbook. There is a group called the Disciples of Avrynner. Basically, psions are hunted and persecuted as heretical. This group is a secret network -- a kind of support group to help psions to get by and learn about their abilities. They have some altruistic goals/sworn enemies as well. It seems like a fun way to play psions with a cool place in the world -- members of a benevolent secret society in hiding.

For 2E and probably ever should a nice conversion come out, I really like Al-Quadim.

But for right now Oathbound is my absolute favorite, though I do give a lot of props to Scarred Lands.

Kalamar I played in for a while in the very begining and was unsatisfied, though I like the deities and the names, but I suspect the increased support it's gotten over the past year has made it much more playable.

I'm playing as opposed to running in Forgotten Realms right now, and I have to say that I like the amount of detail that player's can take advantage of in that setting.

its a maturity thing

the ettiquete here in general is better that was my point. I get the feeling that a lot of the posters here are "old school" as in been gaming a long while and don't feel that they have to prove or justify their opinions, thus our forum here is more open. I find it quite refreshing.

As for the best campaign setting, I don't have a personal favorite and won't because each setting will get modified in some ways by most DM's anyway, and each of us like different things for different reasons.

Me, I like Scarred Lands over Kalamar simply because its darker and grittier as it is written. There are some things I do like about Kalamar more, like the written alphabets and languages (that is really cool) which is stuff I think greatly missing in many sourcebooks.

I put Forgotten Realms in the middle because I am so used to it and I like the setting because sometimes its just fun to play in a high magic game that is more lighthearted (but it can have its gritty side to it, read Lords of Darkness for some of the darker aspects of the world).

that said, I have seen more anti-FR sentiments on these boards than any other settings, and I don't have a clue why, but I guess that is because its been done amost to death and many of you are probably tired of it and want something new, which I totaly agree with.

I put Ravenloft down further on the scale because it just doesn't appeal to me at all, period. Al'Qdim (I know i misspelled it) isn't one I like a lot either, but that could have been because of the DM that was running it and my character died in the second session because he set me up.

However, Gamma World, now that is just plain fun and equal in fun for me as FR is. Sometimes there is nothing cooler than a mutant bunny with a flamethrower riding a old jeep across a vast wilderness running away from some stupid pure humans that think they are superior just because the bunny has long ears and a bushy tail driving a jeep.

Then you got Dark Matter, probably one of the best non-d20 settings ever, and for me personally the coolest non-d20 setting that needs to be converted over is Torg, which is a blend of everything in one very messed up and chaotic world. Okay, so I am pushing and hoping it gets done, nothing wrong with that, is there???

That said, I am getting off the soap-box and the rant and am going to sleep cuz its late and I'm getting tired. Just remember that each has his or her own personal likes and dislikes, and that is what makes gaming so great.

A possible theory or two

The newer 3E FRCS may have turned some off.
It's the top dog and people like to take the top dog down a peg.
Its quality has gone down becuase Ed G. doesn't have control.
WoTC's treatment of its employees, laying off most of their talent, reflects on its products.

On that note, is it just me or has Wizards DnD site been really lacking? The content just stinks on ice lately, IMHO.

What about Al-Quadim do you like over other settings?

What's Oathbound's appeal? Anything special about Scarred Lands besides what has already been said?

Why were you unsatisfied? Why wasn't it playable?

What kinds of dedail does FR have that other settings don't have that players can take advantage of?

I'm interested in your answers :)
