Best Excuse for Gaming Evar?

the Jester

Legend
We've all had those days where something came up when we had to game- maybe we got scheduled to work, maybe our dog had to go to the vet, maybe we just had chores to do.

What's the best excuse you've seen used to get out of 'other' stuff so that someone could escape and game?

The best one I've seen was almost ten years ago- the player in question was at work but had to go home because 'his sister was in the hospital giving birth.'

The next day, when his boss asked about it, he said it was stillborn- killing any chance of followup at all!

Anyone else have any examples of ruthlessly shirking outside commitments so that the game can go on?

I had a cousin who told his mother he couldn't go to a family picnic because he had to go worship Satan...

This was, of course, in the early/mid 80s, so it got quite a reaction.

had a friend use the death of a grandparent as an excuse to game.

unfortunately, he had 4 other grandparent excuses on the books already.

his stepgrandfather really did die, so it was legit. he just didn't attend the funeral.

One of my fellow officers was supposed to go out of town to his inlaws' for a family get together. We generated a fake subpoena saying that he had to testify in court. We played D&D all day, and he went home and told his wife that his case was called last. He told her that the judge dismissed the charges, so there would be no record in the paper.
So does that make us chaotic good, or neutral evil? ;)

One of my friends used the excuse "I got a job, mom" back when we were in high school. He was never late, as he had said that he could walk to work from home. It lasted about half of the summer until his mom wanted to drop him off and pick him up. I don't think my wife will fall for that one, and she much prefers the truth.

I've never HAD to use an excuse, though I did use one once and got caught.

I had to borrow my dad's truck to get to college once and forgot to put water in the radiator, (we both knew it had to be filled before going over the bridge). I got home and the next day he discovered the engine seized up. It was ruined. I felt mortified. But I wanted to play DnD.

So I got a ride and played forgetting about the truck for a few hours. Got home and dad saw me get out of this car and for whatever reason when he asked "where'd you go?" I lied and said, "to look at cars".

Well, turns out the damn bastard who gave me a ride called the next day about the game and my dad didn't know who he was and so the guy said, "I'm the guy who gave him a ride yesterday".

This did prompt me to take extra good care of my own new car, so I guess I did learn something.

An exscuse? Ack, all my gaming is scheduled and preset a month or so in advance. I make the excuse that as long as I plan for it (responsibly amongst all the other things I do) then I have to do it. Afterall, a schedule is a schedule and to anyway break from a set schedule is just being irresponsible!! :p

Why would one ever need to use an excuse? "I'm going to go game now" about covers it for me. And yes, I prefer the simple approach.
