Anyone got a really cracking MMORPG on the go. Aion? Star Trek? Guild Wars? Something beyond the standard WoW hopefully?

How much time are you willing to devote to the game? How do you feel about adventures in space?

There are tons of video tutorials on how to play the game on YouTube which I recommend you watch. If there's a negative thing to say about EVE it's that it's really hard for new players to get into. It is complex and massive.

I'm really enjoying Guild Wars. I picked up the Trilogy edition last year and have managed to spend lots of time playing solo or with friends. The story from the first was pretty decent and the other two have been keeping me on my toes as well.

I may pick up the final expansion (Eye of the North) some time, but funds have to improve first.

Yeah, Guild Wars is a very good game. And no monthly cost is surely nice. :)

GW2 is in the works, too.

Looks real good but I'm a bit Star Wars averse

Heh. Can't help you with that, but I have high hopes for that game, considering it's BioWare (Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights I, Knights of the Old Republic I, Mass Effect, Dragon Age) doing it. :D

Been checking out more and more as the week goes on; so I can do a few blog posts on MMORPGs. The Old Republic looks very slick and could well be the game to get me past my Star Wars reservations (Jar Jar Binks I can just about handle but it takes a lot to overlook the alien teddy bears?)

I also started looking around as I've a young MMORPG player who's pretty much maxed out what Free Realms has to offer. Guild Wars 2 looks a decent, inexpensive option but a good look at the 'contenders' communities seems next, as the player's more interested in in-game social interactions than simply beating up monsters/ collecting items.

Going to give the LotR MMORPG a trial run today, as they've put the basics on free to play. Aion is also up for a 'drive by', as the 'Exalted' approach would probably appeal to the player :)

I'm a relatively new MMO player, and my experiences with them are limited to the two following games.

I've been playing Dungeons & Dragons Online (from the same folks that do Lord of the Rings Online) and really been enjoying that b/c it's set in and around the D&D game that I love, and it's free to play too so you can see if you like it.

I wouldn't recommend it for a younger gamer but another one I'm really enjoying is Age of Conan, but if you check it out make sure you get up to date with the Rise of the Godslayer expansion that fixed a lot of the early bugs of the game.

Planning on checking out Lord of the Rings now that it's moved to the free to play model.

Yeah, I thought DDO was a good game. With it being free to play now it is really easy to give it a whirl and try it. Granted, you do need to pay to unlock some things, but the early levels have a lot of stuff for the free to play player. I enjoyed my time playing it.

I may get mocked for this, but here goes...

RuneScape.

Highly varied, humorous quests, large area for free players, larger area for members (only 5 USD/month). And you don't have to focus on something you don't want to do.

Java-based, so not nearly as pretty as most MMOs, but it is web-browser based and you can play for free for however long you want (I was free for 4 years or so, then got membership for new toys).

yea you can either opt for a subscription to unlock premium content, or buy it from the DDO store as you want, or you can work to achieve favor (each quest is worth favor points, different amounts at different difficulty levels) and unlock all the premium content without paying anything but your time. I just unlocked the Drow race the other day by reaching 400 favor.

i really like this method for MMOs and it has been extremely successful for Turbine, which is why I think they are moving Lord of the Rings to the same business model. I pay for as little or as much content as I want at my own pace.
