If you get cover price, you're doing well. I went through a couple years ago when I needed space and cash. When the comics did sell (about 50% of the time), I was lucky to get cover price. Only exceptions were Transformers, GIJoe, and some of the Spider-man. Everything else was... disappointing. Esp when you consider that I had to buy some as back-issues with inflated prices.
So the idea of comic books as an investment is a laughable joke. At the expense of the buyers. Esp when you consider 20 years of inflation.
Excellent advice! A gift to the next generation is the best value one can get out of much of the deluge of so called 'collectible' items.I usually just give away old stuff I have no use for anymore, to local friends, relatives, etc ... If they don't want it, I just donate it to the local library or thrift stores (ie. Goodwill, etc ...).
Awhile ago I gave my old comic book collection to a nephew. (Even all the expensive Uncanny X-Men issues from the late 1970's).
