BoVD: How's this for random...

I had similar randomness. I didn't get carded, but I did run into this guy I was friends with in highschool and hadn't seen in about ten years when I was eating lunch in the foodcourt and leafing through the book. He was a somewhat hardcore christian that had always worried about the impact DnD would have on my spiritual life. There was an uncomfortable silence when he noticed the book I was reading :)

I just bought it a couple hours ago at the Wizards of the Coast store in San Diego, and yes they carded me. I wasn't offended but i asked the manager why they were carding and he said that WoTC kind of freaked out with all the controversy on the message boards on their own site as well as sites like this one, so they decided to card folks just to be safe. Doesn't make much sense to me when you can buy all the vile white wolf/black dog (which is much more vile in my opinion) stuff you want with no trouble at all.

Anyway, i don't know if there is any truth to this but that's what i was told.

I didn't get carded, but my FLGS owner occasionally gives me friendly reminders that such-and-such-a-product requires the use of the Player's Handbook, and he'd be more than happy to sell me another copy :)

It's amazing the kind of knee-jerk reactions people have when they see a label with 'mature content' on it. I imagine that no one in a store would think twice about selling China Mielville's new book 'The Scar' to anyone regardless of age, despite the fact that there's stuff in there that would curl your hair (and I haven't even gotten to page 200 yet) because it doesn't have a 'warning mature content on it' . Or anything by William Burroughs for that matter. (and yes, I am citing the two authors that the Dungeon editor said he would love to see campaign settings based on -- and I wholeheartedly agree!). It's just how it's packaged. On the other hand, I bet you could get the BOVD from your friendly neighborhood library and no one would bat an eyelash--support your local library, the last bastion of intellectual freedom! :)

Heh. Just wait till someone packs it in their carry-on when going through airport security.

I joked with the game store I bought it at if he needed to card me. He laughed.

Man I still get carded when I buy lotto tickets and I'm 27.

Odd...I get carded when I buy Groceries, but then my Credit card says "Check ID" on the back instead of a signature. :D

Needless to say, my divers license is usualy ready to be inspected when ever I use my cards.

I got to see him read the sequence with the mosquito women to an audience at Worldcon. When he was done, he said, "Well, if you can get through that, theres nothing much more to worry you in the book." ;-)
