Brushes for painting minis

As I want to get back to painting my minis I need new brushes.

I still have some Windsor and Newton Sable ones that I keep for painting with artists oils, but I need suitable brushes for painting 15mm wargames armies and 30mm gaming figures.

Any recommendations - I know that the synthetic brushes now are pretty good, but are any particular ranges outstanding?

The synthetics are OK. Sable is still the best. They make Windsor and Newtons that are perfect for mini's. I don't have the numbers off hand, but you should go check them out.

I usually pick brushes that have the shape I want regardless of material, but the synthetic ones tend to bend over time no matter how well you take care of them. It's a strange thing.

My current briushes don't have any sizes marked on them ( well, one says "small", another "fine" ). If I wanted to try these spiffy sable brushes on sale, what should I order? A 0 and a 2x0? What sizes do you most commonly use the nice brushes for?

I would recommend the size 1, and the size 0 brushes. If you have room for a third brush, make it another size 1 brush so you can use one for metallic paints only, and the other for non-metallic paints. It may seem to be a big brush at first, but the quality of the brush means that it can keep a very sharp point, and that is what you are paying the high prices for (at least when they aren't on sale).

Well cared for, these brushes should easily last several years. Be sure to get some brush soap too, if you don't already have some.
