Can you Really kill someone?

My Three Point Plan:-

1. Kidnap him and get away with it. (The guy's a king with three kinds of 20th level spellcasters willing to use all sorts of miracles to bring him back, so this isn't easy!)

2. Exhaust him of any and all spells and equipment he might have. Oh, and paralyse / hold person him.

3. Feed him to a shadow.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the shadow's strength drain and shadow creation power (a) gets rid of the body, and (b) turns the king into a shadow himself. I'd argue his soul was trapped and converted during this process.

Shadows are nasty.

Soul Bind him to a gem then put it on a first class flight to Hell (Plane Shift), write a note in Infernal explaining the contents of the gem, and instruct them to destroy the gem releasing the soul and introducing him to a life of eternal tourture.

Give him a suggestion, along the lines of, "Kill the userper to your throne" Or just tell him you putting him to the future to when an evil person usurps him, wish he was back when his father was on the throne. He should kill his own father, thus never existing. Or you kill him.

For a truly despicable plot, try an organization whose goal is to assassinate EVERYONE who can cast resurrection or higher magics within 1 hour of each other.

edit: How can such a small string of words have so many misspellings :)

He's dead, Jim

One method: A 17th+-level wizard could sell her services as an eternal caretaker (if you have to ask how much she charges, you can't afford her). She takes your victim, kills him, imprisons the soul in a Soul Bind spell, and keeps the gem on her person. The wizard casts Mind Blank every morning, so she is continually immune to all information/divination magic. Your victim is dead, cannot be resurrected, and even wish/miracle will give NO clues or help in the matter.

I don't have my books here, but I assumed that Destruction (Clerical spell) would do the trick. Maybe, as nobody else has mentioned it, I'm wrong, though.

Nope. True Resurrection, Wish + Resurrection, and Miracle can still bring the character back.

In other words: No, you can't *really* kill someone. That arch-villain or do-gooder will always have a chance, however slim, of rising from the beyond and planting his boot/shoe/heel in your backside.

That's part of the fun though...so the party turns your main villain to stone, puts him in a Leomund's Secret Chest and loses him on the ethereal plane. Beats just about anyone looking for him below a certain level, but at high levels he might suddenly return to plague the party once again! (insert evil DM laugh here)

Where's Nightfall when you need him? Relics and Rituals has a spell for when you need someone "not merely dead, but truly most sincerely dead." Shattersoul.

Busts the soul into 9 pieces, which must be reassembled prior to rezzing. My PCs will need it for their eventual murderous ramage thru the Forgotten Realms.
