They definitely did not make it clear that it was a stand-alone film. It references the MCU and connections to MCU continuity throughout its plot. It is part of the MCU timeline. Thanos is literally an Eternal, and his actions are a major point of conversation in the film. The Celestials were first introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy and appear again in Love and Thunder. The Dark Knight character was brought in to set up the (now on hiatus and probably abandoned) Blade movie. Etc.I never expected it at all. They made it pretty clear, at the time, that it was a stand-alone movie. That it shows up at all actually does surprise me.
Marvel has just largely dropped The Eternals because it wasn't very good and didn't find an audience.
Anyhow, yeah, this trailer didn't do much for me. I like the idea of another spy thriller like Winter Soldier but then you have a very long in the tooth Harrison Ford as the antagonist, and Red Hulk is a silly character IMO.
