casting and AoO

any one think that concentration checks
vs AoO to powerful
do you think that maybe a reflex save vs concentration total needs to be made, just like tumbling in some other house rules
or vs. any check that lets you ignore AoO

Salutations,

I think it is fair the way it is now.

The DC is 10 + damage dealt + spell level

That can be a pretty high number if the person hitting them is a fighter.

A wizard has poor reflex saves. He would rarely make a save against that DC.

He also has low hp's- so he may not be able to survive too many AoO to cast that many spells.

i guess i didn't make my self clear
for the magic user to cast a spell and not recieve an AoO
the have to make a concentration check with good skills and feats + con, after awile they dont even have to roll for there spells
to go off in someones face.

i was thinking off the tumble option rules where the player makes his tumble check and this is the DC for the opponet to make a reflex save to attack w/ AoO.

Do you think this sounds like a good idea for concentration?

Yes, though perhaps you can make it a concentration check opposed by an attack roll from the attacker to determine if an AoO can be made.

He's talking about "Casting Defensively". One idea that I'm still trying out now is to make it less absolute. Right now, it's too hard to make at low level, and too automatic at high level. I don't think I saw anyone try to cast defensively, except out of pure desperation, until level 12 or so, and by that point it was pretty much automatic.

Currently: DC 15+spell level, and if you succeed there's no AoO. It does nothing against readied actions.

New version: DC 10+spell level, and for every 2 points you succeed by, you get a +1 dodge bonus to AC against any AoOs or readied actions triggered by the casting action.

Failing the check causes the spell to fizzle, as before.

EXAMPLE: if you're level 10, have CON 14 and 10 ranks of Concentration (max is 13), that's a +12 modifier. To cast your best level 5 spell defensively, the DC would be 15. Rolling a 1 or 2 would cause you to lose the spell.
If you rolled an 10 on the check, that'd give you a +3 dodge AC bonus (12+10-15 / 2 = 3.5, round down) against AoOs or readied actions.
And, of course, if they DO hit you on these actions, you get the usual Concentration check to cast through damage.

We changed the feat "Combat Casting" to let you Take 10 for all Concentration checks, not just when casting defensively.
