Cavalier PC

Edit : If i use a lance one handed while mounted do i get the 2 handed benefits?

This is debated. As written in the PHB, the lance is a two-handed weapon (with the special property that it can be wielded in one hand). A two-handed weapon gains +4 to disarm and sunder checks, adds 1.5x Str bonus to damage, and gains 2-for-1 Power Attack.

The FAQ claims that when wielded in one hand, the lance is a one-handed weapon, and that when wielded in two hands, the longsword is a two-handed weapon... despite there being no support for this in the rules.

In my last communication from CustServ on the matter, they said that no, a longsword remains a one-handed weapon, and they are in the process of attempting to get the FAQ answer removed or changed.

For what it's worth.

Okay so can someone explain the deal with armoring a warhorse to me? Is it just buying armor for it and fitting it to the mount?

Yes, but.... ;)

It is just like buying armour for any PC, just more expensive. A WARhorse is combat trained and is taught how to wear armour (there is a thread a few days back about warhorses not being proficient in armour that might interest you). mounts not trained for war are not profecient and suffer penalties.

Just note that the PHB at least states that barding for a horse is x# the cost of a humanoid's armour. I haven't noticed a rule anywhere, but I assume the same multiplyer for armouring the horse (it should take longer to put barding on a horse).

The only big reason to go with Paladin over Fighter for a mounted character is the mount - given, that's a good reason, since a regular mount is going to die, often. However, there may be another way to get a good mount without taking all those levels of Paladin:

1) Be a fighter/Cavalier, possibly with an above average Charisma. Maybe a couple levels of Paladin, if your Charisma is high enough, you're a human, half-elf, or dwarf, and you want the bonuses to saves.

2) Take Leadership at some point.

3) Recruit a Druid as a cohort.

4) Just have said Druid constantly Wild Shape into the mount of your choice, depending on things like level, combat (flying mount if you need to do aerial combat, for instance).

Humiliating? Yes. Degrading? Yes. Possible grounds for a lawsuit? Sure. But, hey, being a cohort is essentially like being an intern, and the druid should really expect no less.
Ahh, that made my nightmorning!
