D&D 3E/3.5 Chain Spell (3.5) work on Rays?

I have a slight disagreement with my group as to whether or not the Chain spell from Complete Arcane works on Rays. Due to discussions here on the 3.0 version from Tome and Blood, such as this one: http://www.enworld.org/showthread.php?t=53974, I do not believe that the old or new version woks on rays (effect, not a target).
I can't find anything in the FAQs or errata. Am I missing something, mis-reading the feat, or does it not work on rays?
Personally, I don't mind either way, especially beinga spellcaster in the game in question, but I'd feel better with some opinions from the people here.

You're right. Ray spells don't have targets, but instead have effects, and therefore can't be chained, in much the same way that Fireball can't be chained. If you want to hit multiple creatures with a ray take Split Ray instead.
