D&D 5E (2024) Change multiclassing prerequisites?

I like the idea of multiclassing being feat-locked.
Can you elaborate more on your idea of minimum level please?

Mainly because of all the benefits that are possible when multiclassing as opposed to other feats, combined with someone being able to have 2 separate class levels at level 1.

4th level feat: Class initiate
+1 ASI
you gain all 1st level benefits of a multiclass of the class of choice as in PHB. You do not gain any HP or HD.
8th level feat: Class adept, requires class initiate
+1 ASI
you gain 2nd and 3rd level class features of the chosen class. Do not gain any HP or HD from those levels.
12th level feat: Class expert, requires class initiate and adept
+1 ASI
you gain 4th and 5th level feature of the chosen class. Do not gain any HP or HD from those level. Do not gain 4th level ASI from that class
16th level feat: Class master, requires class initiate, adept and expert
+1 ASI
you gain 6th, 7th and 8th level class features of the chosen class. Do not gain any HP or HD from those level. Do not gain 8th level ASI from that class
19th level feat: Class paragon
+1 ASI
you gain 9th, 10th and 11th level class features of the chosen class. Do not gain any HP or HD from those level.
If epic destiny or what ever makes a return at 20th level
then you can gain all class features of 12th, 13th and 14th class levels, even the ASIs instead of that boon if you have all 5 feats before.

Pathfinder 2nd edition does use feats for multiclassing. Fighter - Archetypes - Archives of Nethys: Pathfinder 2nd Edition Database This link is for anyone in PF2 who wants to multiclass into Fighter. Like multiclassing in 5e, it still requires two of your attributes to be a certain value and it requires you to give up the class feat of your original class. Once you get past the Fighter Dedication Feat, you can take as many of Fighter archetype feats as you want while still advancing in your current class. The only loss will be not being able to pick up as many of current class feats as you would like to.

Also requires 13 Int (or Wis). So not sure how that helps.
A Paladin can take a level of sorcerer or bard with no issues. But a level of wizard is going to cost him 5 point buy because.... ?
A monk/ranger is perfectly fine. But a monk/paladin is gimped. Paladins can smite with unarmed strike, so why not allow an order of the holy fist?

Pathfinder 2e doesn't have the ability score boost tied to feats.
And nearly all classes features are feats. Each balanced with eachother.
And they are setup so they won't stack.
It's not going to work with the current system. (Also, 4e did it first).
Removing prerequisites is easy enough.

That is a fair argument, unfortunately we are limited to 6 abilities and the bard, sorcerer and paladin share one. If there was another distinguishing metric between those classes I would likely enforce it as I do believe in a necessary cost for the purposes of multiclassing, although I find myself agreeing that it should be feat-locked instead rather than through abilities.mellored said:

That's not saying pick a second subclass class from your original class, more that an oath of whatever paladin simply cannot progress far enough into warlock to be a hexblade without meaningful skill/tool/fest investment, sorry your budding hexadin would need to go back to taking paladin levels till they check enough boxes to qualify for that next warlock level. Unfortunately I don't think that it would be possible to accomplish that without throwing out the garbage skill system in 5e and moving to something that provides room for meaningful opportunity costs to hook onto.
