D&D General Changing Order of Character Creation, from 1e to 2024

Uh. No....

If you want to be sneaky, rogue is still a skill/stealth master. Cleric is the best healer. The Wizard is the master of all arcane magic. Druid for shape changing. Ranger for survivalist. Bard for face. That's the same as it was in every edition.

C'mon, if you are going to hate post, do better than this.
Are you denying that the majority of class abilities are designed to be used in combat?

I dont think I have worried about what order I built a character.

For me, step 1 is, decide on a concept. I guess, this means deciding on the class-species combo at the same time.

Then background, to start the process of deciding the backstory of the character. I pick skills and now feat depending on the concept, but here these inspire an inworld narrative context, such as what age and circumstance a particular feature was acquired.

I used to do point-buy Abilities, but now am happy enough choosing an array. Its fair, and I like everyone starting off with more modest scores at level 1. (Heh, as if 16s are modest.) The placement of scores depends on the concept − mostly the class, unless there is a complex build in mind.

I think placing the class first is to deemphasize species. The class is what the player wants to do in the game. It makes sense to go first. Then species is where the person happened to come from, and background how one got where one is now. When hiring someone for a job, the first thing an employer wants to know is, can the person do the job. Where the hiree comes from can be interesting, but ultimately is besides the point. At best the background experience helps demonstrate how one arrived at being able to do the job.
