A few random ideas:
- The PCs are identified prophetically. The temptation to rule over all they survey might actually provide a sense of direction.
- On the other hand, the PCs might actually see their characters as psychopathic idiots, in which case something along the lines of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels might be in order. Let them have schemes. Have schemes unfold as they logically and disasterously should.
- A village is actually, if you think about it, a large dungeon. All you really need to do is provide some geographic isolation and it might as well be B4: The Lost City.
- For that matter, how about horror? Bad guys getting attacked by worse things is a classic trope. On the other hand, a shapeshifting gold dragon and its minions could create an unconventional thriller scenario.
- And the classic dungeon delve. An evil, intensely powerful artifact has been buried in an underground dungeon, guarded by all manner of dangerous creatures: angels, golems, ghosts, dragons, and elementals.
