While I'll always prefer the more "realistic" art, I still appreciate the occasional humorous or whimsical take on the game. The cartoons in the 1E DMG are a good example of this, as well as things like Downer from Dragon and even some of the whimsy within Witchlight and Strixhaven. I'm among that crowd that got drawn in when I was but 10. Grim and gritty will probably always take second place to fantasical and imaginative images for me.

In the end these ARE alternate covers - if it isn't to you're liking that's okay, there's still the standard covers, which are plenty serious.

These seem to really accelerate the "cartoonification" of D&D and what seems a focus on capturing a younger audience.
I think this is awful and compares terribly with most 5e art.

it’s awful not in the skill it takes but the tone. Talented artist but choices that don’t make sense to me.

guess they can’t all be brom dark sun….but just no

A bit of background. I was in school and the others were playing during recess.

For decades I didn’t know where that art came from. It wasn’t until I finally looked at a copy of Holmes edition that I knew.
Tom Wham one of my favorite artists from that era. And he designed fun games too

Great for you. You can like it, I don't. Let's leave it at that, ok?
You said it might appeal to a much younger crowd. If you didn't want anyone responding to that, then you probably shouldn't have said it. 🤷‍♂️ That's how forums work--if you make an opinion, people can respond to that opinion, especially if the claim of the opinion doesn't fit with anothers' experiences. If all you said was that you didn't like it, I probably wouldn't have responded at all.
