Cholesterol - The Bell Tolls For Me

Del

First Post
So I go in for regular blood tests as part of psych treatment. I'm due to turn 30 in a week or so.

It's like I turn 30 and DING my GP calls me in for something. I return his call and the girl makes me an appointment for thursday.

I never have any physical health problems. I ask what the doc wants to see me about and she says she thinks it's my cholesterol.

*looks at the stack of empty potato chip bags to his left*

Really .. err .. oh no.

It's just a checkup for my heart I guess, judging from the response from the girl answering the phone it aint terminal. But really? Me?

*looks at his empty coffee cup begging for a decaf refill*

I turn 30 and its like the grim reaper hits a giant bell. I can see him laughing at the guy who has lived without fear of death for some time.

Wish me luck and nothing more then an admonishment about my diet, please. This sucks.

My cholesterol was up too. I started taking medication for it and cut back on my food intake. I used to eat about 4-5 meals per day, each meal most likely being more than one serving. I cut back on my food intake and only eat about 2-3 times per day now. I no longer need the medication, and I'm a happy camper.

My deal is the smoking and junkfood. I have never really had any intake problems. 2 meals a day - not skinny or overweight.

Damn you Baked Lays! Damn you!

You might want to cuss out your ancestors while you're at it. :)

I (dang near) mainline cheese and my cholesterol's actually a bit low.

You know, I am doomed to have bad cholesterol, it runs in the family, I have diabetes that makes it worse, I get all the medically bad stuff...but just cause they are worried doesn't make it certain that anything is going to happen and if it does it doesn't mean that I am going to die. So buck up and wait and see what they say before you start having your tombstone made.

Oh I agree. I was just joking, with a little worry too.

I survived ridiculous nonsense all through my life, and I won't be leaving anytime soon.

I use to always laugh becuase the nurse from my dr office would call saying I needed to come in immediately becuase of my cholesterol so I always had to ask them to look at my older reulst so they would realize it may have actually come down. I almost always ran extremely high numbers.

I have tried dieting and such but almost all of mine is genetic in the end. I have finally found medication that works for me after a few years of rotating through all sorts of things.

I was told by one Dr. that an issue with cholesterol is one number only improves with exercise and the other number with diet.

The best thing is all the things that help Cholesterol improve (except medicine) are also good for you in general diet and exercise is always helpful.

Good luck

Cholesterol is one of those indicators of potential future problems, like an early warning. It's good because it gives you time to make changes if you need to. Mythusmage is correct, a lot of it is hereditary. One of my friends at works eats right and works out hard every day and her cholesterol (like her mom's) goes to around 450 without medication  . The good news is that there are so many treatment options. The bad news is that the first two are diet and exercise. ;)
