Chris Pine has closed a deal to star in Dungeons & Dragons, the live action film based on Hasbro’s massively popular role-playing game from Wizards of the Coast. Hasbro/eOne and Paramount are jointly producing and financing, with eOne distributing in the UK and Canada, and Paramount the rest of the world.

So, with the rumors of Pine's character being a human named Edgin can the DragonLance chatter cease?

Well, having read the link, I can already see what the pitch was ...

"So ... it's Guardians of the Galaxy and Lord of the Rings combined! All we need is a good Chris to front a bunch of wisecracking and loveable sidekicks, and maybe get ... not Bradley .... hmmm... a Matthew McConaughey-type to voice a CGI wise-cracking gnome, and then we can have Vin Diesel on board to play a himself a socially inept mountain dwarf. The money and the franchise will be ROLLING IN!"

Of course it’s going to be like Guardians of the Galaxy. And that’s awesome because the Guardians of the Galaxy movies are highly entertaining and did mondo box office. We want this movie to suceed, right?

Anyone expecting a serious, earnest, straight treatment of D&D in this movie was setting themselves up for disappointment. Even today, Dungeons and Dragons is a byword for goofy nerdiness. Playing it straight would be box office poison.

Now they just have to get the soundtrack right. Hopefully the studio lawyers are busy securing the rights to Black Sabbath, Rush, etc.

Even my home campaign isn't particularly serious, even if I do deal with serious issues now and then. I mean, GOTG dealt with patricide which is not a light hearted subject. It's all in tone and approach.
