Cleric Varient

Crothian

First Post
I'm trying to come up with a none combat oriented cleric. I don't see all cleric having aall armor proficencies. So, I'm calling this the Priest class until I think of a better name.

HD: d6
BAB: As Wizard
Saves: Good Will

Skill Points: 4 per level
Class Skills: As Cleric

Spells: Same chart as cleric. Still use Wisdom, blah, blah, blah

Armor and Weapons: No armor, and 4 simple weapons.

Domains: Any three

Turn Undead: As Cleric

Bonus Feat at 5, 10, 15, and 20. These feats can only be meta magic feats or divine feats.

Very rough first draft.

Reading your (and it is pretty good) made me realize why I never liked the cleric or any of the version: They are all the same no matter what god you have.

The guy who whorships thew war good should have a completely different skill selection from the guy who worships the knowledge god. They should be trained in different weapopns and armor. Different domains is not enough to really distinguish clerics of different religions. So, this would mean I need a cleric class of each of my gods (thankfully I only have 13. Ya, 13 classes is a lot, but think how many I'd have if I used the Forgotten Realms). Or I come up weith a more versatile class.

Now, the guy who went through and gave better definition and powers to all the Domains might be the way to go.

THoughts?

I played a cleric with the following.

HD d4
BAB as wizard
Spells, as cleric except casts all spells spontaneously.
4 skill points per level.

If anything I was less underpowered. This works well.

underpowered knowing all the spells and being able to cast sponataniously? Looks more powerful then a sorcerer. The versatility of that character is amazing.

I've allowed Domain spells to be cast somantaniously, I like that.

Perhaps the idea itself of domain should expanded. I am not thinking of just one spell per spell level, but somethin different.

Base Cleric
HD: d4
BAB: as wizard
Weapons: all simple
Armors: light armor
Spell: core table (without domain bonus spells)
A couple of class skills
Skill points: 2+int

At the beginning a cleric can take ...let's say for now... 5 domain; a cleric can take each domain multiple times, and each time he can choose some "special power" to have:

I will make some examples to be clearer:

WAR
1/2 BAB (like the classic cleric)
All Armor and shield proficiencies
d8 HD
Martial weapons proficiencies
Domain bonus spells

HEALING
Lay on Hands
Turn Undead
Domain Bonus Spells
4 Class Skill bonus of choice (DM's approval)
+2 skills point per level

...and so on... if you like it we can expand it all together..

That is an interesting idea. I don't think you want so many options under each domain though. Maybe the choice of 4 domains, but each damain has two choices. That way you can still have everything from 2 domains just like in the PHB.

Let's see:

Animal Domain
Animal Empathy, Animal Handling, Knoweledge Nature Class skills
Animal Domain Spells and cast Animal Friedship 1/day

Maybe we do need more choices under each domain. My problem with that is if we hgave a lot of abilites then it'll be real easy to min max.

I had the same thought when i was having dinner. But eating octopus' salad helped me to find a way to reduce the risks of min maxing. (edited the sentence to make my thoughts be more..."human"!!!!!!!)

1. Givin just a maximum of two choises per domain, and in each choises will be a good power, and a medium one, or to lesser ones.

2. Building a sort of point-buy system, where a BaB increase, or a good save cost more than some more skill point per level

3. Make some oppositional domain: it impossible to take some domain if already taken something in philosophical opposite (Healing and War, Nature and Destruction, Law and Chaos, Good and Evil). For the most powerful domain set more than one opposite domain (for War no Healing, Nature and Travel).

This last one will let loose the versatility of the Alt.Cleric though. So perhaps i wuold discard it, or leave it as a last resort option.

Anyway, i am glad to help you, that could be a very hard hit to the classical cleric... and i do like it a lot!!!

So let's workin' on it!

The http://www.athas.org/ versions of the standard cleric takes away a lot of the base cleric. Then, based on your selection of domains, you can pick up armor proficiencies, weapon proficiencies, class skills, and so on, above and beyond the weakened base class.

Quintessential Cleric, from Mongoose, switches spells from the domains, so that depending on which aspect of the domain you worship, your spells vary. (For instance, if you get the Air domain, do you do so for the Gentle Winds, or the Violent Storms type of god?)

How about each domain gets 2 or 3 abilities. Instead of picking ant one, you have to pick the weaker before the stronger? THat would prevent min maxing (maybe not as much as octopus' salad, but I'm only human).

I've yet to see QC. It it officially out? THis is the first time I've heard it mentioned in content.

But back to the subject at hand. How about a general giudline of powers for each domain. You have to have the first power before the seconf, and you must have the first two before the third.

1) First power would be additional class skills and +1 skill point per level. If we start the class at base of 2 a level and have them choose 5 levels, they could get a lot of skills and skill points, but nothing else. So, min maxing skill points will still leave you worse then a Rogue.

2) Second Power would be the Domain spells and the domain ability. For those that offer class skills we can come up with something new here.

3) Third power would be increase BAB by one level. Or one beeter saving throw, or Armor or weapons proficiencies or better HD.

How does that sound for a basic outline of what each Doamin would do for you? We can also allow new domain abilities to be picked as the gain levels.
