There's some great stuff in this thread.

Keith Parkinson's cover to the Cyclopedia of the Realms book in the old (grey box) FR set has always stood out for me.

Not quite art in the traditional sense, but the maps in the Time of the Dragon boxed set for DL were phenomenal, and have always stuck with me. I had the main Taladas map up on my bedroom wall for years, and I can still picture it vividly in pretty good detail.

I don't know who or where it is from (It's a separator in the 2e monstrous compendiums add-ons) but DAMN that's a powerful image. I'd crap my pants if I ever saw something like this...

That's from Throne of Bloodstone, module H4, and the artist is Keith Parkinson. That module's claim to fame was that it was designed for 100th level characters! (In First Edition AD&D, that is, though due to the small difference in power levels in that version, even 20th level characters could theoretically accomplish it.)

In 1e it was the cover of Throne of Bloodstone, an adventure for characters level 18-100 where you go to the Abyss and fight Orcus. Is it still the highest-level/highest-difficulty module ever published?

In general, I found I'd link a particular artist to each game world, so depending on the game, pretty much anything from that artist could get me in the mood. Easley was always Greyhawk (back in the day, at least. Not so sure about his 3e stuff). Elmore was Dragonlance. Caldwell just seemed Forgotten Realms to me- very bright, bold colors. And Brom defined the Dark Sun style; for me, the biggest thing wrong with the second box set was not enough Brom.

Did anyone mention Jim Holloway? I think he still does some work for Sovereign Stone and possibly other d20 companies. I would also consider him one of the people who had some really compelling D&D images. I liked his drawing of that sorceror fighting off mongrelmen in one of the B series modules (I think).

issue 118 has a special place in my heart for two reasons. One is that it is my favorite cover. The scond is that it is the FIRST dragon mag I bought, due largly to the fact that the cover is so good. I had been playing OD&D for a few months when I saw this issue. Needles to say that most of the information inside did not pertain to my game, but it really opened up a whole new world to me.
