(completely OT) I finally got a console, PS2, and I have no idea what to get for it.

Well... after being a Vic20, Commodore 64, Amiga, PC and Mac gamer; I've finally joined the rest of the world and got my first console, a PS2. The problem is that I have no idea what games to get for it, lol.

Since I'm on a limited budget and I'm trying to get the most bang for my bucks... Any suggestions for good single-player games? And what are the best two-player games out there? Thanks guys! :)

Meh, and another person has a PS2 while I'm stuck with my PS1. *Sulks*

But seriously, a whole lot depends on what sort of games you like. If you like action games, Devil May Cry, Dynasty Warriors 3 and Metal Gear Solid are good choices, perhaps even Onimusha 2. As for RPGs, plenty around out there, friends have been raving about FF X and Kingdom Hearts. Grand Theft Auto 3 is supposedly a very interesting and fun game.

You might like to provide specifics with regard to genre. I might end up quoting you part of a catalog :D

Without knowing more about your genre preferences, I can't make many suggestions, but this is a board for D&D/D20 so...

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was a great hack 'n Slash dungeon crawl for one or two players. Bashing stuff, pretty graphics, lots of loot to collect and funky spell effects. The story was weak, but it provided sufficient reason to bash stuff.

I can certainly make more suggestions if you gave us some guidelines on what kind of games you like.

Definitely get Onimusha:Warlords. You should be able to get it for 19.99 now, as its sequel has just come out. It is highly addictive, and is a “Resident Evil” type game in which you play a samurai killing demons and sucking soul energy out of them which you use to power up your weapons, etc. Again, HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. And one of the best games I’ve ever played. It’s not a 1st person, but a 3rd person - the graphics are fantastic and so is the story. BUY IT!

I am currently hooked on Kingdom Hearts.

Onimusha is cool, but its replay value is somewhat lacking. That being said, it's a great 'rental' game, i.e. a game that you can rent and beat in 5 days of play.

Metal gear solid is a lot of fun if you like that genre, ditto gran turismo 3.

If you're into 1st person shooters, two old PC favorites Half Life and Deus Ex are out for ps2, being two of the best fps games ever made, IMO.

Since you're in PS2 land, remember that you can buy old ps1 games for the console as well. From the RPG genre, FFVII is one of my fav games of all time, so I suggest that.

List your game type preferences and I'll give you more suggestions. :D

Heh, loved FF7 too. First console RPG I ever played :) Though I was assuming (s)he wanted PS2 recommendations since a PS2 was bought. But no matter :)

BTW, I assume you won't want to bother with import games, right, Arravis?

Max Payne. Get Max Payne. It's so sweet it hurts. GREAT story, the details in the enviorment (TVs that have actual shows, Badguys' conversations you can listen to, etc), and the action is Beautiful.

Get Robotech: Battlecry. It is unbelievable. They got the original voice cast, and the grapohics look like the cartoon. It's amazing.

Of course, you may kill someone when you get to the impossible levels with the cats eye.

Perhaps if you tell what you enjoyed on previous game systems we can make better recommendations?

Gran Turismo 3 is the best car racing game out there; its so real looking that I've had people walk by the demo mode and think it was some motorsport on ESPN. Drives good, looks good.

I played Onimusha and was pretty frustrated with it. I remember sitting through interminable movies and cut-scenes in order to get a few seconds of game-play. It looks great though, and it is slightly more interactive than Dragons Lair. ;-)

Dance Dance Revolution is a huge hit and a fantastic party game; although the idea of actually dancing to play a game may turn some people off. Dont bother playing this with just the controller; its only fun with a dance-pad.

Grand Theft Auto 3 is a big hit, but, be warned, it is rated M for Mature. I havent played it personally, so I cant say how far it goes, but I do remember thinking Kingpin had crossed the line. Considering that I think Quake is the greatest thing since sliced bread, I dont consider myself a big wuss on violent content.

I played Max Payne on the PC and enjoyed it a lot. The gameplay gets a bit repetetive, but its really well written. Imagine that -- a shooter where the story actually means something. Beautiful over the top noir. Pretty violent too (its key gameplay feature is "bullet time" where the action becomes John Woo style slow motion), but theres a point to everything that happens.
