Confounding Arrows

First Post
I'm hoping someone can help me with the Confounding Arrows and other similar powers. With the power, when you hit a target 3 times it takes + 2(W) damage. My question is if this damage is applied to the last damage roll, all 3 damage rolls, or is it applied like quarry damage (whichever damage roll I choose)?

Thanks for your help.

I don't think it's spelled out in the rules. In the game I run, it would be applied to the last die roll (so it would only get maxed if the last attack was a crit).

Similarly with pounding Barrage, which does an extra d6 damage if 2 hit..the d6 is appllied with the 2nd hit, so is only maxed if the 2nd hit was a crit.

It's just an extra 2[W] damage just the once if you focus fire on the same creature and hit it all three times (which isn't actually bad at all). Not to mention it stuns the creature too, which isn't a bad deal in the end.

Definitely the 2(W) only applies once. It isn't clear if its applied along with the last hit or tacked on afterwards, but I would apply it to the last hit, making it a 3(W) damage on that hit.

I would probably add the 2[w] to the last attack so they are only maximized if the last attack is a crit. It seems like the logically most sound interpretation. But by RAW that isn't entirely clear.

I think the real question is:

would the bonus 2[w] ALSO apply static damage bonuses again or not?

No, b/c you just add extra dice to an attack - if the answer was yes then one could argue that horned helm adds static mods once more or a crit as well.

Confounding Arrows

Your targets won’t know what hit them.

Martial, Weapon
Standard Action Ranged weapon
Target: One, two, or three creatures
Attack: Dexterity vs. AC, three attacks
Hit: 1[W] + Dexterity modifier damage per attack. A target hit once is dazed (save ends). A target hit twice is stunned (save ends). A target hit three times is stunned (save ends) and takes +2[W] damage.
Miss: The target is dazed (save ends).

OK, so.

Pick one, two, or three creatures.

Against each of those creatures, make 3 attacks. If the first attack hits, you do 1[w]+mods. If the second attack hits it takes 1[w]+mods and you get to stun, if the third attack hits, you do 3[w]+mods.

Obviously the status effects also apply.

EDIT: This power is extremely poorly phrased, incidentally.

Surprise no one has pointed out that after the first attack, hit or miss, the target is Dazed. Attacks 2 and 3 will have auto-CA.

Actually, it says "3 attacks, 1[W]+Dex per attack". Meaning that, if you target one target three times, you should get this:

Hit once: 1[W]+ Mods, dazed (save ends).
Hit twice: 1[W] + Mods + 1[W] + Mods, stunned (save ends).
Hit thrice: 1[W] + Mods + 1[W] + Mods + 1[W] + Mods + 2[W], stunned (save ends).

Pick one, two, or three creatures.

I don't think the power works that way. You have 3 options:
1) 3 attacks against 1 target - the only way to get the extra 2[w]
2) 2 attacks against 1 target and 1 attack against another target
3) 1 attacks against 3 different targets.

The power grants 3 attacks - if you want to make 3 attacks against up to 3 targets you'd need 9. The wording would be more like "3 attacks per target".

+2[w] suggests it must be added to a pre-existing set of damage.

If something has + in front of it, in 4e, it's always for adding to something else.
