It's great to see boxing on prime time network TV. Even though the ratings have been so-so as TV goes, it's been great for boxing, which is in dire need of some good publicity.

What's even better is that the Pride of Providence, Peter Manfredo Jr, is fighting tonight. Go Peter!!

Contender

Big boxing fan here Glassjaw. But I am seeing Star Wars tonight! :D

I thought the fight was really solid, difficult to score in some rounds, but I think Sergio did get the better of Peter. The scores were too wide in my opinion, but the result was correct.

Big hats off to Peter for being a class act. I read some of his gracious acknowledgements to Sergio. Peter has mastered being a classy loser, something that very few fighters ever learn to do. Even the very best of them.

I hope all of the fighters get some more TV exposure and we see some of them again. Some I could do w/o, some I would love to see gain more prominence and success.

Rumor has it that Mark Burnett, the executive producer, will be shopping Contender around for another network. I would hope it gets picked up by ESPN, Showtime, HBO, or at least someone. If he did this again in the heavyweight class, that would be fantastic. We need to see another generation of heavyweights emerge beyond the last one of Tua, Ruiz, Rachman, etc...

I hope we get a chance to see it, I would definitely watch again. Great drama, great stores, and actually really good TV.

In general, I hate reality shows, but The Contender is probably more acceptable. Honestly, because I don't have cable, watching The Contender reminded me of watching the Muhammad Ali vs. Leon Spink fight a long time ago.

I thought that Peter Manfredo was going to win despite both boxers started a little slow in the first round, but he came on fire after that. But the tide turned when Sergio did some body punches and quickly follow-up on head shots. Overall, Sergio managed to turn the disadvantage of being against the rope as his advantage of "fighting out of being cornered." In the last round, he let the beast unleashed, hitting Peter with a ratio of 4 punches to Peter's 1, despite his profuse bleeding nearly above his left eyebrow.

This earns a rematch.

I hope the next Contender series would feature a heavier weight class.

I agree. Besides the fact that it's a very well-made series, once you're in a ring and somebody is punching you, there's a certain amount of inherent reality there :)

So how many people here expected Sergio to win? I'd picked him from the second round.

Glad to see some other people enjoyed the show. I probably had more of an interest because Peter is from Providence but still a great show nonetheless.

I was obviously disappointed in the results but Sergio definitely won. He showed some really poor sportsmanship during the fight though. I've seen Peter fight a few times and he is somewhat inconsistent. Some fights he shows a lot of power, other times he looks like he is in slow-motion. Last night was one of those times. Regardless, he definitely deserves a rematch.

I agree. The cool thing about it too was that all the fights were legit. They were all sactioned by the California boxing commission and go on the fighter's pro records.
