Has the Eater of Knowledge (Ilsenine’s brain proxy guy) been converted yet? If not, too bad, we missed an opportunity to put this one in our article. Regardless, I don’t want to convert it until after Lords of Madness comes out, in case it winds up in that book.

I think I would like to work on the balaena next. :)

too late to say no, anyway. ;)

Balaenas serve as the primary mode of transportation on the river Oceanus and are the equivalent of the lower planes' hydroloths. They look very much like large gray whales with bright, intelligent eyes. Balaenas have a friendly demeanor about them and are often seen conversing with the inhabitants of the upper planes who visit their watery domain.

Balaena communicate using a form of telepathy.

Combat: Because of their peaceful nature, balaenas prefer to avoid combat whenever possible. Their considerable speed in water helps make retreat a viable option. When pressed, however, a balaena can attack with a ramming head-butt against targets submerged or on the surface of the water. Head-butt attacks do 1-10 points of damage per hit and are 50% likely to knock the victim off balance. Because of their size and the amount of room necessary to perform this ramming attack, balaenas can perform but one attack every two melee rounds.

Balaenas can also perform a tail slap attack against an opponent in the water with it, Due to the size of the balaenas' tail, the tail slap acts as an area effect weapon. Any creature within 10 yards of the tail slap will automatically take 2-12 points of damage, no save allowed. Victims must then make a saving throw vs. paralyzation or be stunned for 1 -6 melee rounds, It air breathers are stunned in the water, they must make a Constitution check for each round they are left stunned and unattended in the water. Failure means they take an additional 14 points of damage. A balaena will never willingly leave intelligent creatures helpless in the water after a tail slap.

Under water, balaenas can emit an extremely loud shrieking noise. Anyone under water within 100 yards of the balaena must make a saving throw vs. breath weapon or be deafened for 2-12 days. This shriek is also 30% likely to attract the attention of, 1-2 other balaena who will arrive within 14 melee rounds. Though they can make their shrieking noise in any round that they don't attack, the roll to attract other balaenas is made only the first time in any combat situation.

Because of the tough, leathery texture of their skin, balaenas will only take half damage from any bludgeoning attack. Because of their acute sense of hearing, balaenas are only surprised on a roll of '1' when under water.

Balaenas can cast know alignment at will and can communicate with any intelligent creature with their powerful telepathy. Because of their telepathy, they are 50% likely to be able to tell when someone is lying to them.

Habitat/Society: Balaenas serve a vital role in the upper planes. They are the most accessible means of transportation on the river Oceanus. Oceanus connects the planes of Elysium, Beastlands, and Olympus (and possibly more) much the same way that Styx links the lower planes.

There are several ways to attract the attention of balaenas to request transportation across Oceanus. The first method, developed by the rugged warriors of Elysium, is a form of ritual. It involves gathering a bushel of grapes from one of the many vineyards of Elysium. These are mixed with holly leaves, and the mixture is then burned on the short of Oceanus. If all is done property, there is an 80% chance of summoning a balaena.

The second method for summoning a balaena is more straightforward. A wizard must step into the water of Oceanus and cast any of the monster summoning spells. This method will always attract the attention of a balaena.

Because the river Oceanus is very large and can be dangerous to navigate, the balaena are a very well respected species. They will never aid evil creatures and are unlikely to aid nongood neutrals. They will use their know alignment ability before agreeing to transport anyone along Oceanus. If the people are evil, the balaena will leave. If they are neutrals, the balaena will inquire as to their mission, using it's ability to sense lies. If the mission is not a good-aligned cause, the balaena will not help the group.

Regardless of alignment, balaena will always help any intelligent life form that is in danger in the waters of Oceanus. The balaena will gently nudge the creature or person to the shore.

Ecology: Balaena are inoffensive creatures, and because of their important role, have no natural enemies. However, the denizens of the lower planes will often travel to the shores of Oceanus in order to try And trick or force a balaena to carry them to one of the upper planes. If they are unable, they will often attempt to brutally slay or capture it.

The balaenas are a race of intelligent cetaceans who swim the seas and rivers of the Upper Planes. They’re especially common in the waters of the River Oceanus, the mighty stream that links the Upper Planes. Like the marraenoloths of the Styx, the balaenas act as ferrymen to any point the Oceanus reaches.

Balaenas range in length from 20 to 40 feet. Their appearance is very similar to that of a gray whale, but their eyes are large and wise. Balaenas’re friendly, intelligent creatures with an insatiable curiosity. They’re allied with most of the natives of the Upper Planes, including the archons, aasimon, eladrins, and guardinals.

COMBAT: Balaenas are peaceful creatures that seek to avoid combat whenever possible. They are surprisingly quick and agile in their native environment, and few nonswimmers can hope to threaten a balaena if there’s open water anywhere nearby. They can sound for up to an hour without coming up for air, and can dive to depths of more than 1,000 feet. They’re physically unable to enter shallows less than 10 feet deep, and they dislike water less than 20 feet deep.

If a balaena is pressed or somehow cornered, it can deliver a powerful ram with its head against targets that are in the water or within 10 feet of the surface. The balaena’s ram does 2d10 points of damage and can knock a man-size swimmer 5 to 30 feet through the air. This attack destroys boats 10 feet or shorter in length, upsets and swamps boats up to 20 feet in length, and violently rocks boats up to 50 feet in length. Even if a boat is not wrecked by the balaena’s first attack, repeated rams are likely to stave in a ship’s side or cause rigging to collaps from the shock. Because of their size and the amount of room required, balaenas can ram only once every two melee rounds.

Balaenas can also slap an opponent in the water with their mighty tails. The tail strikes an area 10 feet in diameter. Any creature in this area of effect must successfully save versus paralyzation or suffer 2d6 points of damage. Creatures of size L or smaller are also stunned for 1 to 6 rounds. Human and demihuman swimmers who are stunned must make a Constitution check or suffer 1d4 points of damage each round they are stunned, unless they are immune to drowning or are aided by another creature. A balaena’ll never willingly leave intelligent creatures helpless in the water after a tail slap.

A balaena’s third means of defense is its magical song. The creature can sing only underwater, and its song affects only other creatures that are submerged. The balaena can make no other attacks during a round in which it sings. There are several possible effects of a balaena’s song; first of all, it can use its song to summon help from any other nearby balaenas or to warn them of danger. If it summons help, there is a 30% chance that 1 or 2 other balaenas respond within 2 to 5 melee rounds. (In the River Oceanus, this chance increases to 80%.)

The second effect of the singing is a powerful hypnotism spell; any creature within 100 yards must successfully save versus spell or become susceptible to a telepathic suggestion from the singing balaena. Usually the suggestion is to “cease fighting,” or “leave in peace.” Last but not least, the song can be used to charm fish or aquatic monsters. The balaena can order these creatures to attack its enemies, but does so only under the direst of circumstances.

In addition to their other abilities, balaenas can communicate with any intelligent creature by means of their innate magical telepathy. They can know alignment at will. Due to their keen senses, they are surprised only on a 1 by underwater attackers. Finally, balaenas suffer only half damage from Type B weapons due to their thick hides and the underlying layers of blubber.

HABITAT/SOCIETY: Most balaenas’re solitary creatures, but in the open oceans of the Upper Planes it is possible to find a family of them gathered together in a pod. Half of the pod will be youngsters, with 9d4 Hit Dice instead of 9d8 and ramming damage of only 1d10. Balaenas traveling without family members are very likely to be accompanied by a friend or fellow-traveler of another race; agathions in whale form, dolphins, or riders (see below) are all possible.

Balaenas’re especially important because of their usefulness to travelers along the Oceanus and other bodies of water. A balaena can carry up to 12 man-size creatures on its back indefinitely, swimming almost 100 miles a day. A balaena can carry up to 4 man-size creatures in its mouth if the travelers need to go underwater. The balaena’s mouth is relatively dry and clean, and the creature can go as long as half an hour while sharing its air.

The balaena expects news, rumors, and stories in exchange for its services. If its passengers’re unwilling or unable to provide such payment, the balaena may decide to put them ashore at the first opportunity and go seek more rewarding acquaintances. The balaena willingly carries good or neutral passengers, but is unlikely to aid evil creatures except under unusual circumstances.

A balaena can be summoned along Oceanus by the casting of any monster summoning spell while standing in the river’s waters. There are other prearranged signals at various points along the river for different balaenas. For example, one wise old balaena called Silvertail swims the seas of Thalasia on the plane of Abrorea. They playing of a certain melody on a flute within earshot of the water is 75% likely to bring him within 1d6 hours. Other balaenas on different planes may be summoned by different rituals.

ECOLOGY: In their home waters, the balaenas know no natural enemies. However, denizens of the Lower Planes often pass near the shores of Oceanus and try to work mischief on the gentle giants. Balaenas’ve occasionally been tricked or forced into carrying fiends into the Upper Planes, and some that have resisted capture or coercion have been brutally attacked.

On rare occasions, balaenas journey into the Astral Plane or venture to the seas of a prime-material world. These solitary wanderers can spend years exploring these far realms before returning to their home waters.

Hold Breath (Ex): A balaena can hold its breath for a number of rounds equal to 8 X its Constitution score before it risks drowning.

Skills: A balaena has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.

Modify this?

Ramming (Ex): As a standard action during its turn each round, an ocean strider can swim at up to quadruple speed (240 feet) and ram a waterborne target (such as a ship or another creature). To ram, the ocean strider must end its movement in the target's space. This attack deals 2d8+6 points of damage. If the target is a creature, it can attempt either an attack of opportunity or a Reflex save (DC 29) for half damage.

Upon ramming a ship, the ocean strider can make a Strength check to breach its hull, which causes the ship to sink in 1d10 minutes. The break DC varies with the type of vessel rammed, as follows: rowboat DC 20, keelboat DC 23, sailing ship or longship DC 25, warship DC 27, or galley DC 30. (See Chapter 5 of the DMG for information about ships). Regardless of the check result, every creature aboard must attempt a Reflex saving throw (DC 15). Success means the creature takes 1d10 points of damage from being thrown about by the impact; failure means the creature is hurled overboard.

I guess we can make the attack usable every round instead of once every two rounds. The balaena is the same size as a balaena (Huge) so I guess we can keep the DCs the same for the boat destruction.

The effect to creatures struck by the ram is a bit different based on which version you’re looking at:

I'd hope that the balaena would be the same size as the balaena. I know I'm the same size as Shade. (I know, you meant the ocean strider).

The second suggests Improved Bull Rush as a feat/bonus feat. :)

It kinda reminds me of this feat from Sword & Fist:

Knock Down [General]
Your mighty blows can knock foes off their feet.
Prerequisite: base attack bonus +2, Improved Trip, Str 15+
Benefit: Whenever you deal 10 or more points of damage to your opponent in melee with a single attack, you may make a trip attack as a free action against the same target. Use of this feat cannot be combined with Improved Trip to generate an extra attack, and successful use of this feat does not grant an extra attack through the Cleave or Great Cleave feats.

nah, i don't like it... you can't trip swimming opponents. :) it's not that important anyway, and the Improved Bull Rush should be good enough.
