Have you played one? Are you talking core only?

I took a bard from first to 24th level, only character that I've done that with in a d20 game. There are also some really good books that gives bards the options they need, and I'm not talking about Monte's rewrite of the class.

The last time I played one was in 2e. it was pretty cool in 2e. We had to maintain spellbooks and I thought the powers were pretty groovy for a non glorious class such as the bard.

Somebody has to hate this class...Me, I'm neutral so far.

Classes I hate in 3e.

Rangers ( Already kicked that dead horse )
Sorcerors ( arcade magic for pen and paper gaming )
Barbarians ( I never liked the 1e UA version! As a DM I'm horrified )

Classes I like. Yes there's something I like!!

Monks ( Always loved this strange little class, and was bummed when it wasn't in 2e )

Thieve's ( My all time favorite and specialty )

Wizards ( I love making my own spells )

Classes I couls care less about either way

Fighters ( So it's a fighter...Multiclass filler )
Druids ( Yawn, Nuph said )
Clerics ( Never could get into it, Proboly the neverending deluge of FR campaigns I've endured... )
Bards ( undecided for 3e, but liked in 2e )

It's not about the class (or the race for that matter), it's about the character. A good character can overcome any problems with the PHB classes and races.

As a player I have no problem with any of the classes. It's as a DM. D20 mechanics don't seem to leave room for modifications.

If I wan't to run a cheezy FR style campaign, the classes are fine, but lower the magic, or throw in some setting specific restrictions and things get ugly.

Just taking away the spell use of the ranger kills the class, unless you add something in its place, but you have to be careful what the spells are replaced with or you have a too powerful class to deal with....In 2e, we dropped the spell use and things worked just fine.

That's why I get bent out of shape about the ranger. However, the class, as is, works fine with the elves in my world.
