Sorry, kreynolds, I was a little ambiguous at the end there. I would like to see a better table, but I definitely think you should use one (of some sort).

Ridley's Cohort, I am saying that two tables should be used, one for items and one for currency. And made magic items aren't the worst case, purchased and found ones are. I was trying to bring the focus away from JUST making the items to the table in general. It is skewed unless the PCs obtain all thier items in the same way.

A fighter or any other class that has saved every gold and sold every item for gold is much less powerful than the fighter that has NO gold because he buys magic items, even though his wealth level is half the other fighter.

You will have explain to me using very small words why any wizard would bother to use item creation feats in your campaign. Why would I want to burn xp and a feat just so you can take away some wealth by arbitrary fiat? What a reward.

A feat is very valuable. It is hard to put a gold value on a feat, but I would think a savvy player would happily spend 5000 to 20000 for a slotless item that gave his PC a feat ability, depending on the feat.

It seems to me a wizard in your campaign should buy only buy things with cash. (The exception being when you are powerful enough to create a "signature item" that will define the style of your character.)

I am not sure kreynolds is looking to strip his PCs down to the level given in the DMG, but get a baseline of what their wealth should be to adjust further rewards. Am I wrong kreynolds?

And his wizards would be best served by finding magic items, not buying them. Buying them is the worst of the acquisition methods, costing you double the market value on the wealth chart.

Is anyone reading my posts or just arguing?

Technically, creating magic items is not any cheaper than just purchasing magic items, (barring any fluctuation in market values, if you do that in your games) as the costs are nearly identical. When you create a magic item, sure, you only have to spend half the amount of gold to make it, but the item counts against your total character wealth at full value (NPCs are the only exception to this rule). Additionally, when you buy magic items, you don't pay the XP cost, so it doesn't slow down your level progression. Making your own magic items allows you to avoid having to carry a massive amount of wealth (half the normal value of the item to be created), but you pay it one way or another in the end, and you now level slower because of the XP expenditure.--kreynolds


Can you explain that one again? How creating magic items isn't cheaper than buying them? I must have a short memory.
