Cowboy Bebop

It's not so much "dark" as "jaded," really. It's not depressing, it's just lost all sparkle and light and ohh-la-la factor. No one is *impressed* with space ships. No one has faith in the government.

Links to the 'western' feel, I guess. :)

Cowboy Bebop is an excellent anime series. The movie was good too.
Obviously the best soundtrack for a Cowboy Bebop type campaign would be the many Cowboy Bebop CDs. The show had an eclectic mix of everything from bebop to jazz to world music. The show's opening theme, Tank, makes for great chase music.
Bebop does fit the mold of the western quite well, and bounty hunters are referred to as cowboys frequently during the series.
WEG D6? Nah. I think D20 would be the best fit, if for no other reason than feats. Feats allow the kind of customizing that brings characters to life. The same could possibly be said of the GURPS system, but you'd have to buy a slide rule and a graphing calculator...

Crest of the Stars completely and utterly sucked, in my opinion. :\

I plan on buying D20 Future, but that will probably be my last large rulebook for a while, seeing as how my group has dissolved due to people moving away, the younger ones going to college, etc.

Moridin: Color me intrigued.

I'd second that BESM or Tri-stat for a CB game, though I think Tri-stat might be better just because the rulebook only costs $10, or as a freebie online somewhere (RPGNow?).

If going the D20 route, I'd say Modern is your best bet.

The BEST way to do Cowboy Bebop in an RPG would be with Hero system -- you don't have to fool around setting up weird classes or come up with any new rules. And Michael Surbrook has already done awesome writeups of most of the characters, plus a great background to the world. It's right here:

See you, Space Cowboy!

Even if you don't play Hero, it's worth checking out just for the background info. Plus you should probably read every other page on his website, too.

As for the "darkness" level on Bebop I think it's an analoge for a real society. You've got bright lights, truckers, but beneath every soceity there is dirt, and with some of the science available that dirt is sure to nasty.

Anyway a world can't be entirely dark if they have a whole TV show devoted to bounty hunting >_<

I was wondering if anyone has doen a CB game, and if so what system did you use? If you were to do a game based in the CB universe what game system would you use?
Yes, I have/do (actually, it's Cowboy Bebop with a bunch of other series).

We use Fuzion.

Well, certainly, it's no Gene Roddenbury sweeping vision of an enlightened mankind.

While it's not "the future makes things crappy," it's not "the future makes things better," either. The future just is -- things are as crappy as they are in this day and age (and I'm sure most would agree that "Today" isn't exactly an ideal. ;))

It seems that everyone has a different idea as to what system CB would be run best under. Sticking with the topic, I'm going to have to say OGL Steampunk with Palladium and GURPS Horror elements would do quite nicely... :\
