Creatures with DR versus Magical Weapons

I thought that the natural enhancement bonus for adamantine was +1 not +2. I could be, and very possibly am, wrong.

That was my 2 cents.

Could I get some change, please?

You need a magical enhancement bonus to sunder a magical weapon, and adamantine does not inherently possess such a bonus.

From the SRD:

Magic Weapons and Shields

The attacker cannot damage a magic weapon or shield that has an enhancement bonus unless his own weapon has at least as high an enhancement bonus as the weapon or shield struck. Each +1 of enhancement bonus also adds 1 to the weapon's or shield's hardness and hit points. If a combatant's shield has a +2 enhancement bonus, a combatant add 2 to its hardness and to its hit points.

Nowhere does it say that the weapon doing the sundering requires a magic enhancement bonus.

In regards to the original question: although perhaps not strictly allowed by the rules, I allow monsters to sunder magic weapons using their DR rating. If they couldn't, then some monsters being granted the Sunder ability would be quite silly: such as an Elder Earth elemental. When you have DR 15/+3 and 228 hit points, why do you need the ability to sunder non-magical weapons?

Also, I rather like the idea of a Balor reaching down and snapping the paladin's +3 Holy Sword like a twig. :)

I disagree with the Sage about creatures with natural DR being able to sunder magical weapons. It's not a bad house rule, but I don't believe it's allowed with the core rules.

As for using an adamantite weapon to sunder, I don't see anything in the core rules that requires a magical enhancement bonus to sunder a magical weapon, so a natural enhancement bonus should do just as well.

I agree about adamantite, its should be able to sunder magic weapons.

I'm wondering how old that sage reply is, because to my memory the distinction between natural and magical enhancement bonuses for things like adamantite didn't come out until MMII, which didn't come out all that long ago.

Adamantine (+2)

DMG:242, Special Materials.

Mr. McMurray does have a valid point about it not stating anywhere about the weapon having ot be magical. I always assumed that it had to be magical. I had never looked at it that close before. Thanks for the knowledge.

Very interesting... The reverse isn't true... You can sunder an adamantium weapon with a steel weapon (the adamantium weapon is not a magical weapon... It's a weapon with a natural enchantment).
