Critical Hit with Fireball!

Yes indeed, sir. We wanted "weak criticals" as well as overtly strong criticals. Thus, the pendulum can swing either way in these cases. We play a low magic game as well, so the players don't always have the buffs ad infinitum from Clerics and Wizards to their boon.

Ah, the low magic explains much behind the reason for this. Good idea, by the way.

I don't believe I've seen confirmation for criticals, but if SW Saga is a "significant preview", I can see a return to the ol' tride and true "Nat' 20 always hits, always crits" from 1st edition.

However, notice that the fireball crit only took out ONE troglodyte skirmisher. I'm wondering if fireball is no longer necessarily an explosive area-of-attack fireball by default.
Well, it said that one was taken out by the Double crit. I suspect that the others were damaged by the other crit. Or that this one was at full HP and just got vaporized.

Eh, I've got a simpler theory.

Fireball (and other AoE offensive spells) might work in 4E similarly to the way fire seed does in 3E. Specifically, you aim at one target, who can be critted, and then everyone else in range takes a lesser amount of damage (and cannot be critted).

Seems simple enough.
