Cure Disease will KILL YOU TO DEATH!

While I enjoyed the humour, I think you meant to say:

DM: Okay cleric, make a Heal check on the fighter.
Cleric: Oh no! Natural one! and the disease is 5 levels above me and my wisdom is low.
DM: Um, the fighter is dead.
Figher: What?! It was just devil chills!
DM: That is true. No, this was the "tear you a new one" strain of devil chills
Figher: Then how am I dead? That isn't even a fatal disease!
DM: (scratching head) Well, um...I guess you...had a severe allergic reaction to those 'mystic salves' he used. Yeah.
Fighter: #@%#$!!

A person casting the Cure Disease ritual can never roll 0 or lower unless the disease is of a higher level than them. If the disease is of a higher level, the ritual caster automatically knows, and can choose to abort the attempt.

As long as the total is 1 or above, the "victim" can use healing surges to recover. Seems perfectly fine to me.

It's interesting, alright. I can see it already:

The only way you can kill somebody with cure disease is if the disease is higher level then the cleric's total heal skill. Assuming the cleric is trained in heal (and if he's casting untrained rituals he deserves what he gets) that would require a disease much higher level then the players, which seems like something that should be dangerous to remove.

I think you're thinking of curing a disease as applying a salve. Take two aspirin and call the cleric in the morning.

I'm thinking of curing a disease as more "cut away the infected tissue and drill a hole in his skull to let the demons out."

Apparently, NPCs can do rituals, and they can do them without any levels of cleric. Not sure how that will go over.

Yikes, dude...you must have one crappy HMO. :) But according to the little excerpt, all rituals that require a Heal check use 'mystic salves" as their components.

Apparently, some of those salves are highly toxic, corrosive, and chock full of bacteria...

It made all diseases trivial once the party had access to a 5th-level cleric.

And for the party, normal diseases should be trivial by that point.
