Craft arms and armor is usually taken by clerics. The feat is really designed for them. Wizards don't wear armor and don't have many weapons. But if almost every cleric in your games really has Craft Wondrous, well that's just strange.

After PC wealth didn't seem to be much of a concern, I thought why not try to get the most from the feat I'd picked. Seems like a balanced approach to me. :p

As I've said Faelar could drop the Wizard's College, take Craft Wondrous, and have an identical build! Even better, because he'd have some gold left over. So then is your argument that wizard's can craft, therefore everyone should be able to have the mercantile feat?

The Gryphon said:
Doesn't cost you anything, please spare me.

Please stop making stuff up. I never said that.

The Gryphon said:
Mercantile background could be rendered completely useless by the DM at any point.

That is what Rae ArdGaoth did. You had a problem with it.

Edit: He didn't make it completely useless, he suggested a level of added wealth he felt was fair and balanced. But my point is he made a ruling on it. You had a problem with the ruling, and here we are.

The Gryphon said:
What I mean is that by taking it as backstory, you don't suffer any of the attendant penalties of not adventuring with the party for the year you spent at the Lady's College (if for example we'd been playing as a party since level one)..

Again, if you feel Faelar is overpowered, I'll scrap him and build a really powerful character.

And if you're really serious about buiding your wealth from level one, please do so! I'd love to see it. What you have at level 1, 2, 3, etc..

Speaking just for myself, I find that power gamers take a lot of fun out of the game. To me, flavorful characters are just more fun

That's why I like Faelar so much, it's all about the flavor. Penthar too. I have a feeling the dwarven defender and the shadowdancer will also be really interesting characters when they get fleshed out - the prestige classes are fun to begin with. I'm not saying the other characters won't be, we just haven't seen them yet :)

Okay, I've been quiet about it, hoping that it would just die off, but this mini-conflict between Gryph and silentspace has been going on for 2 pages of posts. I know that neither of you mean any malice towards each other, but neither of you are budging, no matter what the other says. The whole thing doesn't even matter anymore: A) I decided to give it to Gryph, but more importantly B) He scrapped his character and made a new one, so it's a moot issue. If you feel that it's so important to be right, than you can discuss it in another thread (I'm sure it would get a big response on the rules thread), but I'm not seeing much hope of resolution here.

I'd rather that neither of you responded to this for fear of someone "having the last word", just read it and drop the matter.

Final Word: If Gryph wants to use the Mercantile Background feat and receive the 25% discount on his magic items, he may do so. If silentspace wants to rework his character and take Incantatrix (or however that's spelled), he may do so. But let's drop it now while things are still civil. (At least you put happy faces in your posts. Though they seemed oddly placed at times. :\ )

Well in the beginning the whole thing was between Rae and Gryphon. I kept out of it for several pages, even after repeated statements by the Gryphon involving me. After several pages I finally had to respond. Mostly because I didn't like how he kept making statements of his personal opinions as if they were fact, it seemed bossy and overbearing to me, though I'm sure he didn't intend that.

Anyway, I didn't mean to start a fight, I was just trying to show that other viewpoints are possible. And I'm not trying to have the last word, I was just responding. But I will stop responding now. I apologize to everyone.

So... um... who's playing what now? I'm still playing Penthar the paladin/griffonrider, silentspace is still Faelar the elven arcane spellcaster, Kaitlin is playing Raena the rogue (I like the alliteration), Krug is still going dwarven fighter, and I think everyone else is changing characters?

Sorry, but everybody has been rebuilding characters that I think I'm officially lost :)

Harvey I'm still working on background. As to the Simbul, Faelar thinks she's great. He has no issues about her. Why did you ask? Is there something about the Simbul's I should be aware of? I haven't read the FR novels, so I don't really know details about their lives.

I've never read any FR books either. Evidently, the aglarondan army is pretty loyal to the Simbul, but they also think she's wacko (to a degree). Not sure what the Yuirwood elves would think, and more specifically Faelar, since they aren't under her reign.
