D&D 3.5 Homebrew: Paths of Legend Vol 1: Tragedy at Silvergard

Helfdan: I like it. In all honesty, since you're the first one in with full stats, I'd rather you just stuck with Valen. The only tweak I need is to remove the mention of goblinoids from his background. The goblinoids dwell on their own island-continent far to the south east and while goblinoid armies fought in the Shadow War, they only made it as far as the orcish lands and Thay. Turen sent an army to Azgund's aid so there are many Tureni war veterans, but no actual fighting took place on Tureni soil. Also, the mention of the White Huntress in your background needs to be tweaked ever so slightly. Up until the revelation of her true nature, which was kept somewhat under wraps by the druidic hierarchy, the White Huntress was seen as a benefactor and source of folk wisdom. Most Tureni common folk still hold to that belief and the druids have yet to determine exactly how they intend to handle the revelation of her evil nature and subsequent demise at the hands of the Silver Shadow.

Arkhandus and All: The main Adventurer's Guild HQ, so to speak, is in the Azgundi capital, about a week's ride from the mountains in the east, and about three weeks ride from the western coast of Azgund. The Guild also has offices in Azgund's two major port cities and had, up until the Shadow War, an enclave in Thay, though that operation was shut down and hastily evacuated when Thay marched on the Emirates and was subsequently attacked by the goblinoid armies.

Yttermayn: A centaur would certainly be intriguing, although there will be some logistics issues in that the crux of the adventure takes place in mountainous terrain, which will be difficult for a centaur to navigate. I will post my 3.5 revision of the centaur monster class from Savage Species some time over the weekend if you're still wanting to go with it. Centaurs in this world are members of a loose confederation of sylvan creatures known as The Sylvan Court deep within the central forests of the elven continent. The Sylvan Court generally avoids contact with humanoids except sylvan elves, but a few centaurs managed to find their way onto the elven ships that sailed with the Tureni and the Eldritch Knights to offer much needed reinforcements to Azgund during the Shadow War.

Thanks!
1-I did mean to ask about goblinoids. In your document you wrote most Tureni rangers pick humans as their favored enemy... do they have other traditional foes?

2-I did not know the Huntress's betrayal was secret, I put that only for flavor. I will fix it this evening.

Glad you liked the character!

Helfdan: Other probabilities for Tureni ranger favored enemies include: Animals, Dragons (although rare, chromatics have ventured south from the Drukkar lands from time to time), Plants, Vermin, and Undead. However, any individual ranger from any culture could conceivably have a favored enemy of a multitude of creature types thanks to the Shadow War and the cross-polinization that resulted.

All: Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm extending the number of players, mainly because there have been a heck of a lot of cool concepts so far. Keep them coming. I have four people "locked in" with full stats submitted, but the submission deadline isn't until the 27th, so please keep 'em coming.

Jumping in, now that I think I will have the time and ability to post fast enough to not drag the game. :)

I want to play a nimblewright. Specifically, I want to play a nimblewright that was left for “dead” on one of the last Azgundi battlefields of the Shadow War.

The idea is this:
Corath woke one day to find herself in the last place she expected to be…the site of her master’s defeat in the western Azgundi barony of d’Arnaiy. Damaged and uncertain of her future or purpose, she wandered in the direction of the nearest town she remembered in the hope that she could return to her master for repairs. This should have taken approximately four days. Due to the damage to the land and people of Azgund still lingering despite the War’s end, she had to travel the nearly two weeks to the capital city.

Corath used this time wisely, however. She became aware that, unlike before her last memories, she could think, reason, and make decisions based on herself instead of on whatever her master deemed important. Corath spent the two weeks of travel to the capital city of Azgund thinking on all she remembered doing. She decided she didn’t like what she remembered. This led to her realizing that she was completely independent of her master, a high-ish ranking member of the Thayvian Enchanters' Circle who had been in charge of mitigating/neutralizing the influence of The Shadow Knight, The Silver Shadow and their agents in Azgund.

As she ruminated on her memories, her new-found freedom, and her future, she came to the conclusion that, while she had been limited in her ability to act on her own behalf while tied to her master, that limitation no longer existed. She spent the last part of her journey deciding her future, with the limited experience she has. She has chosen a new name (Corath) and decided to think on the ideals of The Silver Shadow, advocate of choice, and The Shadow Knight, champion of redemption. She has come to the conclusion that her new purpose is to fully explore her future by learning to choose for herself and whatever her causes may be and to actively practice her own redemption for all the wrongs she had done while in her master’s control. She is now actively looking to re-develop her abilities and connect with a group of "like-minded" individuals, although "like-minded" is certainly open to interpretation. ;)

What do you think?

First off, allow me to introduce my wife, Shadowmask, aka Marie. Secondly, let me assure everyone that I do not play favorites. Thirdly, she does have a bit more knowledge of the campaign world than is presented in the setting bible because she's been playing in it for several years now.

Shadowmask: I'll come up with a level progression and 3.5 revision for the nimblewright over the weekend, after I finish the centaur. Love the concept. Nimblewrights were created in Thay for the specific purpose of "out-dueling" the duelists of Azgund and were sent as bodyguards to the spies of the Enchanter's Circle.

You'll want to think about who Corath's master was and his/her purpose in Azgund because that will color not only Corath's memories and possible outlook, but also her appearance, as nimblewrights were crafted to very exacting custom specifications for their intended masters.

Yes, I am still very interested in playing this character. Overcoming hardships and difficulties enrichens the RP experience! I have a few ideas for overcoming some of those difficulties - making sure Aodhan invests in climb, or some other appropriate skill. Possibly purchasing some alter self potions, or changing the monster type to a centaur-like creature with a goat body (like a baurier (sp?)), or maybe a lamia...
I also have a question about the ability point buy system - I am assuming you start with all your stats at 8 or 10 or something, and then distribute points to them from there? Should I go ahead and start putting this character together when you post the stats?
Thanks!

Here is the revised version of Valen Sablewood.

1-Background modified, let me know if you approve
2-Chose humans as favored enemy, after all, he has been a bounty hunter
3-Minor change in appearance, as I re-read the bible :heh:

Question: Is there an official/hierarchical way in which rangers and druids from Turen see each other? Or should Amaury and I agree on something? (the spiritual advisor angle seemed logical, but it may be more organized)

Helfdan

PS: these nimblewrights sound cool... great setting, from what i have seen!

Yttermayn: Okie dokie, I'll have the centaur monster class here over the weekend. I'd rather it stay a centaur as anything else is going outside the range of what I have access to supplement wise. The point-buy system is described on page 169 of the DMG. If you don't have access to it, let me know and I'll post the relevant material from the SRD.

Helfdan: Thanks for the compliment. :) The druids do have a hierarchy that they adhere to and are considered the spiritual leaders of Turen. Rangers affiliated with the druids tend to defer to them in spiritual matters, but the druids also recognize that the rangers are better equipped to handle some situations than they are and thus defer to their judgment when appropriate.
