[D&D 4e] IG's "The Witchlight Strand"

Pier allows the taciturn priest to withdraw to a corner and nurse his wounds, then he rejoins the rest of the conversation. "Well, the inn seems well-fortified for the moment, and some of us could certainly use some rest. I will take the first watch and stand vigil over Jude."

He settles himself in the room with the dead men, doing his best to ignore the smell of four-day-old corpses, and opens his spellbook. Lacking the material components, he cannot cast his Gentle Repose ritual, but he can at least go through the motions and the prayers. Once that's done, he will take a walk around the inn to be sure all of the barricades are firm, then return to the spellbook to prepare for the next day's casting and make some tweaks to the Ray of Enfeeblement.

Sorry to see you go, HM. Thanks for giving it a try, though!

Pier prepares another Acid Arrow as his daily.

Barkeep, is the plan to stay here till you get more supplies or is there someone here who is planning on taking the fight to the orcs or get supplies. If we were to all break out of here then where can we go that would feed these people or take them to safety ?

Do you have a bit of parchment where you could draw a rough plan of the town and mark on anything that might help - stores or supplies maybe ?

And, perhaps tomorrow, is there a window up near the roof so I could climb out and have a look out over the town from the top of this place and see if we have any more Orc waiting outside ?

Druthruss intends to stick around down on ground level not far from his axe and not far from the door either. With the fire going its probably not that bad. At some point in the evening watch he will inspect the door to see how it opens or at least know where the key to it is. He might have a go at darts if there is a board and look for some parchment and pen if possible and have a general nose around the public areas to get a feel for the place and tally up the locals inside. He wont lose sight of his pack, axe and stuff tho.

"I should be able to move around in an animal seeming," Aridha suggests, "unless their bloodthirst is such that they're slaughtering animals wantonly as well. Maybe I can get an idea of the condition of the town...see if there are other pockets of survivors. If there are, and we can bring us all together, we may be able to fight back."

"Aye, ye have the right of it there friend Dwarf. We do need a better idea of what we be facing." He will then turn to Aridha and asks "Can ye be another animal 'sides a wolf? It be lookin' like the pond scum yonder be not likin' wolves." Turning to the bartender "Barkeep, it seems like there be need for bunk space for me, an' me friends and soon. Have ye a room, or we be bunkin' on the floor here?"

Vatan will chuckle a bit before suggesting something a bit smaller. "Methinks that a beastie a wee bit smaller might be a bit less likely to attract hungry eyes. Mayhap a cat or a bird if ye be able. If a cur ye need be can ye be one tha' look a wee bit thin or unhealthy?" He will look around before continuing "I be doubtin' there be others who be changin' shape like ye be doin' Milady, so I be doubtin' as well that ye be wantin' to be attractin' too much attention. Ye be careful out there."

"Indeed," a man says in response to Aridha's question. "There is no true Lord here." The man stands from a stool at the end of the bar. Though he's clearly human, his size would rival that of any orc. "But if it is a protector you're looking for, then you've found him." He makes his way to you, and manages a charismatic smile despite the present circumstances.

"I am Deson Voss, and if there were a ruler in Hania, I would be he." He extends his hand to each of you in turn. "Hania pays allegiance to no king, for what king would rule in this savage land? We are self-sustaining, with gifted farmers and craftsmen. But those who knew how to use a sword were few, and now even fewer as the savages lay waste to our homes and our fields.

"Scouts say that most of them have moved on, with only a few pockets still remaining. Most we can pick away from the shadows and rooftops, but there are still a couple well-formed parties left to do the looting.

"I see that you are no strangers to battle; I pray that you will lend your sword when they finally decend upon us here, for it will come to that, I am positive."

He turns to the dwarf. "Yes, there is roof access from this building. And your crossbow would be welcome upon it. As for moving about in an alternate form?" He turns to Aridha, curious. "I've only heard of such magics, but I wouldn't think it beneath these ruffians to kill whatever it is they see, if only for the sport of it."

Taking the man's hand, Vatan replies "Well, mi'Lord, if there be a shortage of swordsmen, be there others tha' ken the use of a bow? Wit' some rest I believe we be able to aid ye in riddin' this town o' tha' mongrel scum, but t'is sure we be usin' a few extra bowmen ta be dealin' wit' yon cowardly casters." He will look around the tavern again before continuing. "I would rather ta be takin' the fight to tha cowards, than waitin' on their pleasure. Do ye ken the where abouts of the looters an' a map o' tha town so we be knowin' where to be goin to find them?"

"Well we can go an find some and take them by surprise. We would probably encounter a few on their own that way, but we would have to leave this place, its fortifications, and all the people to fend for themselves whilst were out looking. Otherwise we can wait and let them come to us and take them from behind windows and doors but we might have them come all at once. They might come with more of those fire bombs and turn this place into ash.

Presumably there are more beyond the town limits so whatever we do is a temporary fix and we should find some way of either getting these people to a permanent safe house or getting some soldiers here to defend the town."

Aridha nods grimly at Deson's estimate of her chances in wildshape, then says "I may be able to get help as well, if there is help to be had."

She looks at Deson again and asks, "Do you have any allies nearby who would send reinforcements if you could contact them? Or are there elves in the woods nearby? I should be able to get a message past the orcs."
