D&D General D&D 50th Anniversary Gets A TIME Magazine Special Edition

A special TIME edition which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons!

Luke Gygax posted this image over on Facebook--a special TIME edition which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons!

Look what I got in the mail today! The Time Special Edition on D&D. I gave an interview for this issue and truly enjoyed providing some context for the journalists. I love the sub-title “The Game That Changed the World”. It sure did.

It's not the first time TIME has covered D&D. Back in March 2023, WotC's Kate Welch penned an article on the TIME website about D&D entitled 'The Magic of Dungeons & Dragons Can Save Us--But Only If You Let It'. And way back in 2008 TIME talked about 'How D&D Changed the Culture'. This is the first time D&D has had an entire issue, though!

There's no word yet on how you can buy this issue, and it was not on the TIME website at the time of writing.

It wasn’t available at my city’s Barnes & Noble earlier today—but there was a special edition celebrating Pokemon (not my jam, I’m afraid).

I meant to check at my grocery store, but forgot. Maybe I’ll have better luck next week

Grocery stores are a good bet. Walgreens tend to stock a lot of these "special interest" one-off magazines, at least in my area. And, as you already know, Barnes and Noble has a wide magazine selection. It looks like you can buy the "special issues" from Time's online store, but they don't appear to have this one available yet.

From the contents too much of this is on modern D&D, which is basically at best--what, maybe half of the 50 years... but seems the bulk of the issue.

Not anything for me, really. 🤷‍♂️

Nice, I'd like buy it, too.

As for the die, Google Image search brought back some hopefuls, like this and this. There are many, many kinds of fancy d20s out there, though, so if you're looking for an upgrade, do note: here be dragons (and a rabbit hole, including metal, inclusions, glow-in-the-dark, steel-cut, precision weighted, and more).
The pandemic was probably peak cool die, as a lot of people were making them at home -- Etsy is stuffed with great dice -- but even today, there are many, many great dice companies out there, catering to pretty much every style one could imagine.

(There's literally only one die I can think of that I can't find -- a d20 that contains all the answers to a Magic 8 Ball, which itself is powered by an icosahedron. I may have to get a custom die-maker to make me one, which is also a thing one can do now; I got myself custom d6s a few months ago.)
