I'm fiddling around with the idea of making variant sub-classes of the fighter and rogue. They would have the same abilities (or close to it), but would also have minor spontaneous arcane spellcasting abilities. They would get 1st-4th level spells at the same rate as a paladin or a ranger.
Now, coming up with the spells themself is easy. Rogue would be similar to assassin, and fighter would be similar to the hexblade from the Complete Warrior. What is a little more difficult is figuring out how to balance them. This level of spellcasting ability isn't that powerful; no one ranks the ranger or paladin's spellcasting as one of their more important abilities. For the fighter, it's even weaker, since the spells would be arcane. That's much less of a concern for rogues, since they may not even be wearing armor after level 6 or so.
My initial thoughts for the fighter is to drop the heavy armour proficiency, and drop the bonus feat at 4th level. For the rogue, I'm thinking of dropping a few sneak attack dice and maybe delaying the high-level abilities by one level, since the rogue is less penalized by arcane spells. But I'm not fixed on either one; any suggestions are welcome.
