D&D needs improvement

C'mon guys, leave the poor troll alone! You're getting alchemist's fire and acid all over everything, and some people have pets you know!

There's nothing wrong with D&D that Iron Heroes doesn't fix,

There's nothing wrong with D&D that HERO 5th Ed doesn't fix... ;)

I have found that there are fantasy PCs I simply can't do in any of the major D20 FRPGs (D&D, Iron Heroes, AU/AE, Midnight, etc.). Never had that problem with the HERO line.

Man, it's hard to resist necroing that thread. FWIW, I find the anti-Death Spiral realism argument pretty compelling based on the FBI and other data provided.

For those that are interested, there are relevant studdies quoted, but it's pretty late in the thread. Google might be a good resource.

Well as this thread has moved on from the OP ;). I don't find the FBI data as compelling, as it depends on how you view the "death spiral." In addition: the FBI data focuses more on someone still fighting, it doesn''t give detail on reduced effectiveness except in the grosses sense, that is a -1 to hit is not going to come out of the data. ;)

As a previous post mentioned one can derive basically three states from the data:
Fresh
Maimed
Dead

D&D goes with Fresh or Dead, some "death spirals" go with many steps between fresh and dead. I guess I'd advocate a "death step" after a certain % of HP loss (50%) or suffer a performance penalty to reflect maimed. Maybe one could have a feat or save to avoid the penalty. Not that I feel HP needs improvement or that HP don't already do this, that is, it also depends on how you view 0 HP, maybe the death spiral is already there.

Fanboy powers, activate!

I'll say this: I had a very easy time finding a HERO group. I posted on the Hero Games forums and found a group of people in my area that I've been palying with for three years now. Turnaround time took about as long as my postings for D&D groups.

Now, ask me about trying to find people to play Silver Age Sentinels (when I was still interested), Burning Wheel, or even d20M, and you'll get a different answer.

It's weird how these things work ... when I lived in Richmond, it was easier to find HERO players than D&D players. (Of course, at the time, ICE was right up the road in Charlottesville, which probably helped.) These days, I know there are HERO players out there ... but I have a hard time finding them. (Unfortunately, I'm also hampered by anti-HERO sentiment from various players that I do have.)

Depends on what you consider wrong. If your problems are tactical combat, high levels of options in character creation, and rigorous mechanics, then HERO will make the situation worse.

Now, the HERO System was the third system I checked out in the course of my RPGing life (after AD&D/D&D and MERP/Rolemaster), and while I've never played it, I have a lot of respect and affection for it, and it was my 'armchair system' of choice for a couple of years recently with the release of 5th Edition and their stellar genre books. But I've come to the conclusion that while it's a great system, it's not for me. There's a little too much clunk and crunch to it, at least on paper; I place a higher value on unity and elegance in design than HERO does, and a lower one on completeness and precision. Thus, I've been seduced by M&M for the moment. All of this could change, of course, if I ever get around to actually playing. :-)

My point, which I'm approaching, is that I agree with buzz's general point, but would welcome him and others taking it a step further. Let's suggest which of those systems are better for given purposes; not everyone has the same problems with and goals for their gaming, after all.

On a tangent, one of the unexpected benefits of the OGL is that it's allowed for various systems to spring up that use the same general grammar but tweak the details for individual styles of play. D&D, True 20, and Iron Heroes are three very different games with very different results, for example, but a good sourcebook (like the WotC monster books) for one can be useful to players of the other two without too much tweaking, no?

Just because millions of people buy a Britney Spears album doesn't make it good! ;)

I've never had a problem finding a HERO game. I have had a problem finding a HERO game with people I want to game with long term...of course, I can say that of any RPG I've ever played.

I currently consider M&M my second favorite RPG system out there, sandwiched neatly between its conceptual parents, D&D 3.x (#3 on my list) and HERO (#1).

I know that there are people who have used M&M for fantasy games, reportedly with great success. Unfortunately, both of my current game groups are liberally salted with D&D D20-philes who are essentially Allotherrpgphobes. Heck, several of them rarely venture beyond the cozy confines of Core + Completes...(no Psi, no OA, etc.) I once offered to run an Urban Arcana or M&M game...only crickets responded.

And love the other games though I do, I'll choose 20 years of friendship over any RPG any day.

(BTW, which version of banded armour are you talking about? The attempted-to-be-accurate 2nd edition or the who-cares-add-some-spikes of 3rd edition?)

Actually, the 3E Banded has no spikes. 3.5 might, I dunno, don't own the book.

Why am I not surprised to see Storm Raven and Raven Crowking sniping at one anotehr in yet ANOTHER thread?

Count me firmly in the camp of starting with a ruleset that is closer if it's going to be THAT much stuff to change.
