D&D on NPR

Read this post at 7:48 am. Ran to the radio and turned it on just in time to hear the report come on.

"You hit him in the crotch and slice up to his abdomen. His entrails spill out all over the ground."

Hehe. Of course *that* line from the game had to make it in the report.

Good report. And your game group did a good job. I wish my group would do more unique voices for their characters. :-)

I couldn't help but wonder if you guys "played it up" for the NPR reporter. Does your group go into that much detail, and use all those fancy voices all the time?

Come on, be honest. :)

Hehe as a fellow DM listening to that story I realized all DM's have a thing for sharp weapons miraculously hitting the groins of all monsters everywhere.

HUZZAH!

I caught the report this morning. I thought there was a little too much emphasis on the voices thing. The report made it sound like assuming an odd voice or speech pattern was integral to the game. I thought overall it was an ok report, but I don't think it did anything to change the image of the game. It would have been nice if they had also mentioned new, younger players joining the game so it would not seem like something only 30-something introverts who have trouble making friends do...then again I guess they are supposed to report the facts, huh? :p

It didn't air here on 89.7 FM, but thankfully the interview is on the site. Streaming audio never works on my connection but miraculously this one did, without a hitch.

Unfortunately the link to the extra audio they mentioned wasn't working for me.

I enjoyed it. It''s nice to see D&D getting some mainstream press, even if it's a bit off target.

I like the comment about hte wife who says D&D is good for her husband. GOtta get my wife to listen to it.

Is anyone familiar with this book Dungeons and Dreamers?

I agree; I'm not much into the voices; that gets just a little too close to LARPing to me, which is not a mode of gaming that I'd enjoy or feel very comfortable doing. I'll occasionally do an accent or two, but not for a PC that I'm playing constantly.

But, the report wasn't made as an advertisement or PR for gaming, so it hardly surprising that they didn't take a tack with trying to drum up support for new gamers. With any luck, though, it'll catch a lot of thirtysomething former gamers who are now serious people who listen to NPR regularly and who might be interested in knowing that D&D is not just a bit of 80s nostalgia. Maybe we'll get some former gamers back...
