D&D on NPR

I'm glad that everyone seems to have enjoyed at least some part of the story--I think the credit goes to Rick Karr and Manoli Wetherell (the engineer who recorded us) for treating the game and us with respect.

We really do use "voices" for our characters all the time and ham it up quite a bit every week--and we also use minis and battlemats too. It's just our way of enjoying the game--one of many, which is what makes D&D so great.

I rarely play a character without a voice. To me, it is part of the character - everyone I know has their own voice and mannerisms, so why shouldn't my characters? ;)

:) Well done! :)

Very true, Peter. :)

Just to be clear, I have no problem with people giving their characters unique voices. I do it for some NPCs, but never for PCs I play, but if that's what you like, great. I just thought that the report made it sound like just about everyone who plays D&D did this, but in my experience that is not the case.

Just curious Peter, how did you guys get into this report? Do you or one of your players know someone at NPR who knew you played D&D? Did they stake out your FLGS looking for someone? I've always wondered how they find people for these kinds of reports.

I heard the report, and thought it was a good story. I share Joshua Dyal's hope that some ex-gamers might consider coming back to the hobby.

As for voices, sometimes I use voices and sometimes I don't. There are many ways to enjoy the game, and the goal should always be to have fun.

Interesting report - good to see that they weren't knocking you.

We don't often use voices, but do sometimes, I'm increasingly trying to as a DM to distinguish between the NPCs.

There is a program on BBC Radio4 on Saturday 21st, and that will be available on the web for one week after that. I'll post a link for that when its available.

Good question, Thornir! The answer should make ENWorld's BrooklynKnight happy: Mr. Karr found my email address at dnd.meetup.com. Initially, I thought he wanted me just to answer a few questions on the phone but then he explained he wanted to record a session and such. He observed us playing for one week and then recorded us the next.

The NPR folks seemed to really enjoy the session--so much so that I tried to get Mr. Karr to start playing with us! He claimed that writing a book, playing in a band and reporting for NPR didn't leave him enough time. As if! :)
