And yet another question
How do we get new units? I know the rank and file come from the villages but what if we wanted to get high powered characters and unusual monsters?
As some tactical guy somewhere said.
You can't plan for every contigency, but you can plan for a lot of them.
Also I have a pool of scrying and an insane scrying skill (thanks to a handy little magic item) so the first day I'm going to spend scrying. Just so you have plenty of time to prepare I'll list some of the things I'm magically checking out. I have similarly high spot, search and listen checks but I'll only be spending a few minutes looking at any given place, also I'll scry a point a distance away from what I'm interested unless stated otherwise. This will give me a broader view at the expense of missing a few details.
Any armies of good in the mountain or desert or heading towards the mountain or desert. This one is ove vital importance and I'll spend several hours checking pretty thouroghly.
A safe and relatively hidden passage through the mountains. (By this I mean mostly ravine, easily traveled ground, easily defended spots for camping at, food and water near the trail, etc)
The defenses of the villages near the mountains (good side) (basically, are there armies in the village or nearby)
The defenses of the cities near the mountains (good side) (same as above, I'll also try and listen to the conversations of some higher ups for things of interest. I'll do this more for the wealthier towns)
Any easily accessible places of loot in above cities (a wizards tower, a bank, a magical item storage area, any useful visible magical items[statues, etc]
proximity of above cities to each other (how long it would take for a messenger to reach the next city, how long it would take me to reach the next city, how long it would take my mephits to reach the next city)
The western nations (what there cities look like, what the countries look like, listen to random citizens to see how the people act, listen to merchants to see how they react)
In western nations, determine what merchants/spellcasters are likely to work with a Red Dragon (based on who they work with already)
The protocol of visitors to the western nations
The protocol of heavily armed visitors to the western nations
Scout the evil lands and cities looking for good armies that teleported in (this is also extremely important and would take hours but would be closer to the end of the day, so that a lot of them are here.
Finally, I'll scout the good lands looking for armies. If I find any I'll listen to the common soldiers to see what they talk about. I'm hoping they might mention the armies plans.
Note, my spot and listen checks are about +24 with the spotter's stone, when I do find something interesting in any of the above, I'll scry at the farthest range I can that will still allow notice everything. I do this to try and avoid detection. If I can, I'll try to put the scry in an unnoticable position (straight up, behind a tree, under a bush, behind marching units, etc)
And yet another question to end things with, how is time going to pass in the game? Knowing this will be absolutely vital to all my warplans
Strike where you aren't expected, avoid where they want you to be, an army is useless with no target.
